Night Fishing Lure Test: Topwater vs Crankbait (Surprising Results)
- By: Luke Simonds
- on
Topwater has been my go-to at night for a long time.
So going into this trip, I thought I already knew how this would play out.
But a new lure got the first fish almost immediately.
As I rotated between them, it started to get interesting.
Watch below to see how each lure actually performed in this night test.

FEATURED GEAR
- Rod: Slot Machine 7’6″ Medium
- Reel: Otis 2500
- Line: 10lb Daiwa J-Braid 8 Grand
- Leader: 15 Ib Ande Mono
- Bite Tippet: 30 Ib Ande Mono
- Lure 1: Wake Mullet
- Lure 2: Moonwalker
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- I went into this trip comparing my go-to Moonwalker against the Wake Mullet
- The Wake Mullet got bit right away with a simple cast-and-retrieve
- I rotated between the two lures every few casts to keep it consistent
- The Moonwalker picked up once there was more light
- The Wake Mullet was easier to fish and seemed to get cleaner hookups
FINAL THOUGHTS
I’ve leaned on topwater at night for a long time.
But this was a good reminder to keep an open mind… especially when something different starts getting bit early.

Luke, nice job with the wake mullet, I’m tying one on this weekend, I’ll let you know how it worked
Super video, and some great action! I’ve been having some success with that Wake Mullet up this way as well. It’s a terrific lure y’all have designed and I’m a big fan!
Excellent video! I like the night camera. I’m sure the Slot Machine sensitivity helped in the dark. One of my favorite rods. Keep the videos coming!
Did you try any of the different white mullet colors during your night fishing experiment? If so, was there a color that produced better than another?
Great video, I have never thought of using a wake mullet (bass fishing type lure) at night. I will have to try this out next time we head to the coast.
Who uses top water at night? I will be trying this technique for sure, maybe that is why they call it moon walker!!!
I love this video,so interesting.
I have an upcoming trip to Islamorada and will be doing some night fishing. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks. Great video and some beautiful trout!
Good info 👍
Great review. Waiting for the winds to settle down here on the Treasure Coast to try my Wake Mullet. I also throw a lot of poppers but don’t see them reviewed much. Would love to see a popper reviewed in the mix. Thanks!
