In fishing, you hear a lot about rigid rules that need to be followed in order to have success.

But then the next day you hear someone suggest the complete opposite.

One rule with little to no variation is the 90/10 Fishing Rule.

The 90/10 Rule states that 90% of the feeding fish are in 10% of the water.

So it becomes our challenge as anglers to dial in and find that 10% of water with actively feeding fish.

Finding The 90/10 Zone

Smart Fishing Spots is our all-in-one fishing platform for our Insider Members that includes satellite map imagery, underwater contour mapping, weather, tides, and so much more!

Satellite maps are important for pre-planning your fishing trips.

In this example, we’re going to try to find where ambush predators would likely set up to feed.

A major factor you need to consider when trying to find the 90/10 Zone is the current direction and where it will pull the baitfish.

This example features several robust creek systems that dump out into a larger channel.

So there is a lot of water flowing out of these creeks into the main channel.

Simply based on just that information, you should circle the creek mouths and bends to target and fish.

But that’s still a bit too much area to cover.

At this point in your pre-trip planning, you should change map layers to further inspect these areas you’ve circled.

The Shaded Relief (3D) Layer within Smart Fishing Spots shows you a 3D view of the bottom of any body of water.

As you observe the water flow and look for bait behavior patterns, you can combine that with depth.

More often than not, predatory fish will set up so the current brings easy meals directly in front of them.

The key is to understand how the current is moving, how the wind impacts the current flow, and how can I put myself in the best position for success.

You want to find an area that funnels bait into a predictable spot.

Once you are able to dial into one specific area with these features, you’ve found the 90/10 Zone.

Conclusion

Eliminate the disqualifiers based on the season and use these tips to find the 90/10 Zone in your area!

Are you struggling to catch fish in your local area?

This is great information Rich, very much appreciated. I have yet to really utilize the shaded relief feature, so this helps me continue to get a better understanding of how to read that layer. Good stuff man!

Nice video, watching it I thought I knew that spot and I actually had a pic on my phone as a reminder as bottom of the tide spot to try.
