Catfish are slimy and their two lateral fins and larger dorsal fin come equipped with very sharp spines that can puncture your skin and even cut through shoes.
If you’re barbed by a catfish it is quite painful and can be very dangerous.

Being a metalworker have made and used similar product in the past. Works great on some fish. Used it on a 6’ shark and he/she jerked it right out of my hand.
Just cut the leader now. Just me.
Just used mine yesterday for the first time…and first time ever using a de-hooker outside of pliers; Awesome! No touch catfish release. Also, I had only gently spin/flip the catfish and they came right off and I was using a pomp rig. If they were to come off from being lightly hooked I do not believe I had enough energy in my flip that it would have hit me. Bigger catfish though I could see where that might be an issue, so yes, be careful.
Just a little concern. I can imagine the catfish coming off the hook early in the act and flying right in your face, especially a lightly hooked one. Be careful.
I have always been told that touching any fish you are releasing removes some slime which is not good. Your catfish release technique is perfect. How about a Video recommending that technique rather then using any net?

Glad to get an effective dehooker for larger hooks. The one I have is for smaller hooks in the size 12 to 22 range. Great for t small flies, but not for inshore.
Wish I had one of these a couple years ago after getting a catfish barb about an inch into my thumb. Had to have it cut out and a week of antibiotics. Painful is an understatement.
This is great…Joe & Luke fishing for catfish. Even better it has been documented on video.
Haha! We actually had a tough time catching catfish that day… had to go through about 10 grouper, 2 sheepshead, some jacks, and a flounder before we finally caught our target catfish:)

Posted this before. Not trying to affect sales of this dehooker but what I use is a basic screw driver. Preferably a stainless one so it does not rust however, it if does rust who cares? Certainly not the catfish. This method will work even if the catfish is gut hooked. About a 8-10 inch one should be effective. This length will keep your hand away from the catfish. Take the screw driver and insert it down teh catfish’s throat as far as you can. Then, while holding the line tight against the screwdriver, spin the catfish around the screw driver of course keeping it away from the body. You don’t have to exert much force. Simply spin the screw driver so the catfish spins. This will twist the hook out of the fish and around the screw driver. Depending on how light your leader you may sometimes break the line but, on those occasions most likely the hook is so deep inside the fish it was not salvageable anyway. A dehooker can be very useful for all fish and other species too. However, any kind of fish flipping is a bad idea. It’s not safe for the fish or any people, including the operator. Once the dehooker is in the hook bend, just rotate the dehooker back and forth a bit. The weight of the fish and gravity will do the rest.
