Speckled Trout Feeding Frenzy

The idea behind this trip was to find stacked up schools of big trout looking for quick, high-calorie meals before the storm.

I was of course equipped with my trusty Corky Lure ready to slay some trout!

At first, we started fishing close to shore with the anticipation of these fish hanging in the shallows.

The forecast prior to the storm called for warmer conditions before 40 mph winds and freezing temperatures hit the state.

But the water was a bit colder than the forecast so we moved to deeper water where the fish can find stable temperatures.

Try to find drastic depth changes along the bottom when specifically targeting speckled trout.

Soon after we moved out to some deeper water, we started getting into some decent trout almost immediately.

The Corky was having little success so I switched over to the MirrOlure Lil Jon jerk bait.

This is an excellent wintertime presentation close to the bottom.

You want to cast this lure out and let it sink to the bottom.

Then snap your rod back to create 3-4 quick pops.

Reel in the slack and repeat.

The darting action of the Lil Jon tends to trigger reaction strikes from trout.

These trout also kept showing up with mites all over their bellies.

That indicates they are sitting right on the bottom which tells you to keep your presentations as low as possible to trigger the most strikes.

Whenever I am targeting wintertime speckled trout, I always try to look for depth changes and bottom structure.

Keep in mind, these fish are ambush predators and prefer to stealthily wait and jump out at bait passing by.

What is the best test line to use?

I liked this video. Short yet very informative. I also appreciated how important the depth changes are and what the lures looked like. Seeing lice on the fish. I didn’t know that showed how deep the trout are feeding… Thank you!
