2 Secrets To Catching Bigger Seatrout

If you keep catching small trout… but the bigger ones never seem to show up…

It probably isn’t the spot.

Because a lot of times… they’re closer than you think.

There are two things happening that many anglers overlook… and they determine which trout you’re actually targeting.

I created this video to show you two simple tactics that can help you break out of the “schoolie loop”…

and start putting yourself around better seatrout.

Watch below to check out the 2 adjustments that help you upgrade your trout size.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • If you’re catching all the same size trout, you’re in the wrong depth
  • Bigger trout tend to hold shallower than smaller fish
  • Small depth changes like potholes and troughs make a big difference
  • Larger lures help weed out smaller trout
  • A simple twitch-twitch-pause retrieve gets most strikes
  • Look for shallow flats with nearby depth changes

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been stuck catching the same small trout over and over, Tony’s advice is simple:

Move shallower.

Throw a bigger profile.

Sometimes that is all it takes to stop fishing for numbers and start fishing for better quality seatrout.

Great intel, thanks Tony! I too never really thought about bigger trout being even shallower. Makes since, some of my biggest largemouth bass have been caught 3’ or less from the bank!

Hey, I am right with you on your comment about learning about the Boat used in this video, and all the gear to equip the boat, from depth finder to trolling motor, etc.. Especially having just watched a different video about using top water lures by a different salt, strong person, with a completely different type of boat.

This is great information. Living in Pennsylvania we don’t get south often enough. We frequently get into trout exactly as you say, schoolies in the 10 to 14” sizes but nothing bigger. Really never thought to go shallower, honestly, we figured the bigger fish were deeper. Appreciate the suggestion to go deeper.

One question, we fish the Indian River Lagoon near Sebastian, there is little sea grass as you know. Would fish still hang in the potholes that exist among that other terrible black vegetation that is now where the sea grass used to be. Not sure what that stuff is but it certainly doesn’t hold fish like the grass does, well, did when it was there 15 years ago. Thanks for your great videos.

Great information and will be using soon. I’ve also noticed you were using spin caster. Convert?

I was wondering if you can do a video on your boat and equipment, boat, motors, fish finder. Include why you like each thing or what you would do different. There are people like me who are looking to get a boat and fit it out.
