Does Topwater Color Matter? On The Water Test – Light vs. Dark

This might seem like a bad idea.

Taking a perfectly good topwater… and painting it jet black?

No fancy pattern.

No natural color.

Just straight black.

But after seeing what happened on the water… it raises a pretty interesting question.

Does a dark topwater actually work better?

Watch the video below to find out!

FINAL THOUGHTS

One trip doesn’t prove everything.

But it does challenge what most anglers assume about lure color.

If anything, this shows how easy it is to overthink the wrong variable… and miss what’s actually driving the bite.

So now I’m curious…

Would you throw a fully black topwater?

I’ve done well with solid chartreuse top waters. Would love to see a solid chartreuse Moonwalker. Solid pink would be killer too!

Years ago I teased my friend about buying a black Zara spook , boy did it changed my outlook, the black Zara spook type lures like the old day where I go to for salt and freshwater fisherman cast a black spook along a seawall or jetty at night or even around dock you may be surprised

The topwater colors do matter, until they don’t. For me, even a shade lighter or darker make a difference on some days.

Thanks Tony for the great advice I do use a dark top water plug not the spook but have 2 of them going to paint one black and try it

Fantastic instruction and video! Looking forward to the black Moonwalker when it’s available & after seeing this, I just may have to go for the goth look, get some black nail polish, & paint one of my own in the mean time. I gasped when your video caught that monster blow up. I’ll bet that was one heck of a nice red!

I’ve not thrown a black topwater inshore. A Gold Digger 2.0 is one of my goto predawn-to-shortly-after-sunrise lures for seatrout and redfish. My #1 lure for the local tidewater creek Florida bass before sunrise is a black Goat ToadZ. I’d think black could be a good choice up in the salt marsh creeks. Bravo, Tony.
