Comparison review of this and the Johnson Silver Minnow
First, let’s talk about the top pros and cons of this lure.
Pros:
- the gold color has great flash, which can help attract fish
- the textured body can produce more flash and helps add vibration in the water
- the weed guard is effective
- it has a split ring, so you don’t need a loop knot, you can just tie a snug knot to the split ring
Cons:
- the bottom of the screw that holds the hook and weed can catch grass
Should You Use A Swivel With Spoons?
Normally, I don’t use a swivel when I’m using a spoon.
Spoons are supposed to wobble when you’re retrieving them, and I retrieve them slow enough so that they’re not spinning through the water.
If you’re retrieving your spoon and it’s spinning, that could mean one of two things:
- You’re retrieving it too fast, or
- The current is too strong
If you want to retrieve the spoon very fast, or you’re fishing in an area with really strong current, you can use a swivel if you want.
And with this lure, I recommend attaching the swivel directly to the split ring in front of the spoon
Are Gold Or Silver Spoons Better?
I prefer gold spoons to silver spoons.
The gold doesn’t need as much light to give off a good flash, so it works great in dark or muddy water, or even low light conditions, like dawn or dusk.

Conclusion
After using these spoons for a while, they’re now one of my favorite spoons for redfish, trout, and snook.
They have great flash and vibration in the water, and the weed guard helps keep weeds off of the hook.
However, the screw that holds the weed guard and the hook on can sometimes catch weeds, but a little pop usually gets them off.

Love aqua dream spoons and have best results with a slow retrieve. White is great for snook and have caught many reds on black with chartreuse.
Good stuff Dale!
luke, do you think the aqua dream is a better fish catcher than the johnson silver minnow ? please respond
Here’s a link to an experiment I did last year when I put the two most popular colors for each one against one another: https://saltstrongdev.wpengine.com/articles/aqua-dream-spoon-vs-johnson-silver-minnow-weedless-spoon/
So I have learned a lot of good things from you Tony. I have to disagree with your assessment of this spoon and some of your comments about spoons. This spoon twists line. Your statement that if the spoon spins you are reeling too fast is over broad. Sometimes reeling fast is part of the presentation. Sometimes reeling fast is required to get over the rocks. The Johnson silver minnow (in gold) is a better spoon at half the price. In addition a local guide turned me on to the tsunami spoon which is a knock off of the Johnson silver minnow available at Walmart for about two bucks. The guide stated he saw no difference between the performance of the Johnson silver minnow and the Tsunami.
I agree that the aqua dream spoon spins more easily than the johnson spoon. Good to know about the tsunami spoon. I’ve seen it and wondered how it might work. Maybe I’ll grab one at Walmart when it’s less germy haha.
Thank you for feedback Daniel! I only really use a spoon on the flats and use a pretty slow retrieve. I did mention that if you are experiencing issues with spinning to add a swivel.
Well there’s differnt style spoons for a fast retrieve. Tony Acetta, krockodial, gator, johnson sprite etc… The silver minnow is meant to wobble and it wont if its reeled too fast. The Tsunami looks like the silver minnow BUT that gold finish is not the same. The tsunami is a bit darker and nkt as shiny as the minnow. It also dulls up faster but they work. Ive only had 1 aqua dream and lost it on my first cast to a manatee lol Havent replaced it yet.
Just my 2 sense
I used this spoon and it twisted my line something awful. Maybe a swivel would help.
Swivel can definitely help.
Try using a small ball bearing swivel, which turns more easily than a barrel swivel. I soak the spoon (and my other lures) for a few minutes after a trip, and then add a drop of reel oil to the bearing swivel after it’s dry. It’s more work, but I think it’s worth it.
Tony……….a white spoon is a great choice as well.
I haven’t tried one yet but I’ll definitely give it a shot!
white is good so is blue and gold
