The plan for this trip was to drift out to the bait slicks in front of us and see if we could hook into some fish.

Bait slicks appear like oil slicks on the surface of the water and are created by a very popular baitfish called the Pogie.

Especially during this time of the year, the bull redfish are eating and eating A LOT.

Pogies are oily and fatty which makes them even more sought after by redfish.

You can visibly see these bait slicks on top of the surface and the redfish will chase the bait around and pluck off meals.

Sometimes, you might even be able to smell the odor of the menhaden oil.

Not only should you be on the lookout for bait slicks, but you should also have an eye on all bird activity in front of you.

The predatory fish chase the bait to the surface, and the birds know that, so they’ll fly above and wait to steal easy prey.

For this type of fishing, we’ve got popping corks rigged up with Slam Shady 2.0 paddletails.

When it comes to reeling these bull reds in, take your time and do not try and force them to the boat.

You’ll end up high-sticking the rod which is the WORST mistake you can make.

The strength of the rod is down toward the reel and when you lift the rod tip as the fish is right in front of you, you’re holding the weight of the fish with the weakest point in the rod.

Reel the popping cork right up to the tip of your fishing rod, hold onto the cork, and then grab the fish.
