Step 1: Learn at Home First!
Before you even hit the water, practice throwing your cast net on land. Pick an open area (preferably free of dog poop… trust us on this one).
Step 2: Setting Up the Cast Net
- Secure the wrist loop properly. If you just slip it over your wrist, you might lose your net! Instead, cinch it down correctly.
- Make even coils with the rope for a smooth release.
- Stretch out the net and grab the horn, ensuring it’s untangled.
Step 3: Loading the Net for a Perfect Throw
- Grab the top of the net and come halfway down.
- Use a simple two-grab method to hold the net correctly.
- Separate about one-third of the net and place it over your shoulder.
- Keep the rest of the net evenly fanned out in your hands.
Step 4: The Throw (No Spinning, No Mouth Hold!)
Instead of spinning around like a ballerina on the boat (which is dangerous), use this method:
- Face away from your target.
- Rock backward, then forward, and release.
- Let the net open naturally with a smooth motion.
Bonus: Can a First-Timer Do It?
Capt. Mike even teaches a first-time cast net thrower in real-time. The result? Check out the full video!
Final Thoughts
If you want to throw a cast net like a pro, practice these steps, and you’ll never be that guy throwing a taco again.

Going to try this. I have been laughed at more than once. Thanks
what brand of cast net do you have? also great video!
The net used in this video (and most of our other ones) is from Black Pearl: https://fishstrong.com/collections/accessories/products/black-pearl-invi-cast-net-series
Nice job.
Nice! Great way to throw a larger cast net. I do believe there are some easier ways to throw a smaller net but for that size net it is perfect!
