Because this trip didn’t exactly have “perfect” conditions.
Windy.
Mediocre tide.
Brand new spot.
And yet…
The bites started almost immediately.
Watch below to see exactly how this simple grassy bay setup turns into nonstop trout action.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Target the grass edge where shallow flats drop into deeper water
- Drift the zone to quickly find where fish are stacked
- Work your lure just above the grass with a steady jigging motion
- If bites slow down, reset and repeat the same productive drift
- Torn-up soft plastics still work — no need to constantly re-rig
FINAL THOUGHTS
If you’re just looking to bend the rod…
This is about as simple as it gets.
No guesswork.
No perfect timing.
Just the right zone… and a bait in front of hungry fish.

Thanks for the great advice Luke!
Very helpful tips! Any advice on how to fish these grass flats and mangrove shorelines without a trolling motor or stakes when the current is pushing up towards the shoreline? Don’t want to risk drifting into 1-2 feet of water or up against the shoreline, but trying to get the benefits of the structure. Is there a good way to anchor in these situations?
Using a stick anchor is best… when done properly, it’s much more quiet than a power pole. Here’s a video showing it used while drift fishing on a boat without a trolling motor: https://www.saltstrong.com/articles/inshore-slam-without-trolling-motor/
Good advice. Thanks Luke
Great video
Thanks Charles!
another great video Luke. I think you have mentioned before that the skinny lipper is good in the wind. Would it have been good on this trip?
Yes, that is my personal favorite lure for this type of fishing because it weeds out the smaller trout. I focused on The 2.0 rigged on a jighead because it’ll most often catch the highest quantities of fish (which is typically the goal of beginners).
Another great video ! Thank you ! It sounds like mono is the all around better choice for leaders unless there is ultra clear water ?
I prefer mono over fluoro leaders in all water clarities because I have not seen any difference in strikes per hour while the mono is noticeably better at not allowing fish to chew through the leader. For example, I switched to mono even when going down the the FL Keys over the past few years, and I’ve had my best catches down there since then.
Why does everyday use spinning reels bait casters are the best and we need more bait casting rods
When in need of throwing light lures like these small jigs long distances with minimal effort, a good spinning tackle setup with thin braid can cast farther and easier than casting setups.
Bait casters can certainly be good too. I use them when fishing heavier jigs around docks when max accuracy on shorter casts is needed.
Are there any casting rods in particular that you’d like us to add to the store?
I’ve recently started fishing with lures and kayaking with my Army buddies. I’m struggling to catch fish despite getting bites with the Slam Shady. I’m going to follow you video instructions exactly as you suggested. Nevertheless, I’m having a great on the water.
If you’re getting bites but no catches, those bites are most likely from ladyfish or pinfish… a trout will most often get a small jig like this in its mouth quickly allowing for a good hookup ratio.
Luke, when you’re on the water is your phone working on 5G? I’ve wondered for a while now because before my software update I would be fishing and just couldn’t get Smart Spots to work. Thanks!
It’s not always on 5G for sure… when I was in the Chaz last week, I only had 1 bar. Just make sure to not have the update process on this app (or any other app) when you’re not connected to a good wifi.
And if you are in a remote spot with poor connectivity, make sure to deselect any layers that you’re not using to minimize bandwidth.
I’ve been inshore fishing for 20 years and always pick up a trick or two from your videos. Thanks.
When I’m fishing in similar situations to what you had, after catching a few small trout, I switch to a 4″ Mulligan. I catch fewer fish but they are larger as a general experience.
Keep on hookin’!
Thanks for sharing the helpful tip Robert! Another lure that’s great for weeding out smaller trout is the skinny lipper (most trout under 15 inches miss it which is great at attracting the bigger trout).
