This video is just a SMALL clip from Capt. Peter Deeks’ brand new course:
The Underwater World of Inshore Saltwater Fish
A first-of-its-kind course featuring real underwater and drone footage showing how inshore fish ACTUALLY behave around structure, bait, current flow, and changing conditions.
And after watching these sheepshead clips underwater, it becomes pretty obvious why so many anglers struggle to hook them consistently.
In this short clip, Capt. Peter breaks down several small adjustments that can help you effectively catch more sheepshead around docks, pilings, rocks, and deeper structure.
This full course is officially live, and all current VIP and LIFER members get FREE access.
Inside, Captain Peter Deeks goes DEEP into what inshore saltwater fish are actually doing below the surface around:
- Inlets & Passes
- Bridges & Piers
- Flats
- Open Water Structure
- Shoreline Structure

Stay Tight To Structure
One of the biggest takeaways from this footage is how closely sheepshead relate to structure.
As soon as the bait drifted too far away from the rocks, pilings, or bottom structure, the fish often lost interest completely.
Capt. Peter explains that keeping your bait close to the structure and near the bottom is one of the most important things you can do when targeting sheepshead.
Smaller, Darker Hooks Matter
The underwater footage also showed just how visible a large shiny hook can be.
Even with fish actively inspecting the bait, the oversized silver hook appeared to make some of the sheepshead hesitant to fully commit.
A smaller dark-colored hook creates a much cleaner and more natural presentation.
Shrimp Works… But Natural Crustaceans May Work Better
The fish were definitely interested in shrimp…
But they didn’t seem overly aggressive toward it.
Capt. Peter explains that more natural crustacean-style baits like fiddler crabs, clam, blue crab, sand fleas, and barnacles often trigger stronger feeding behavior from sheepshead.
Especially around deeper structure.
Movement Can Help Trigger A Bite
Another interesting takeaway from the underwater footage was how fish reacted to movement.
When the bait sat motionless too long, some fish lost interest.
But small twitches or subtle movement often brought them right back to inspect the bait again.
Why Sheepshead Are So Hard To Hook
The footage also revealed exactly how sheepshead steal bait so effectively.
Instead of inhaling the bait aggressively, they nibble and pick at it piece by piece.
That’s why those subtle “tap tap” bites can be so frustrating.
Capt. Peter explains two effective ways to improve your hookup ratio:
- Let the fish fully eat the bait before setting the hook
- Or lightly lift the rod when you feel the bite to see if the fish grabbed the hooked portion
If not, simply drop it back down and repeat.
Final Thoughts
This lesson isn’t really about some “secret” sheepshead trick.
It’s about understanding how these fish ACTUALLY behave underwater so you can make smarter adjustments around structure, bait placement, hook selection, and presentation.
And once you see it underwater… a lot of those missed bites finally start to make sense.

Extremely interesting video, and I love the comments from others with tips on catching these little robbers!
Thanks for the insight, I haven’t had a lot of luck with sheepshead. They always seem to steal my bait most of the time. I believe I have been using the wrong size hook based on your video. Can’t wait to try again!
Great info!
thanks
Have had great success running a bottom sweeper jig 1/2 ounce or 3/4 depending on the depth and current and then a foot above it using a t-knot and then feeding the loop through a size 2, short shank silver j hook. As soon as you feel them bite, set the hook. It’s amazing how on some trips the bottom one will get them all, and other times the one a foot above will. Sand fleas are fantastic baits as are fiddler crabs.
That’s a great tip John! Thanks 🙏
Really great to see how those thieves always take my shrimp. Also wasn’t aware that there are many other baits they like much better! I must have been sleeping during that lesson! Thanks again, Excellent video and helpful info!
They are excellent at stealing a bait! Thanks 🙏
Loved This! Outstanding!
Thanks David!
That’s one of the best videos!
Informative, and fun to watch. Thank you
Thanks Brad!
Thanks Petter very helpful video greatly appreciated

Excellent. All of the underwater studies are very informative, and sometimes surprising and eye-opening.
Thank you Buford!
