The Most ACCURATE Lure Color Test Ever? (New Penny vs. Terd Ferg!)

For years, anglers have debated whether lure color actually makes a difference or if it’s just a confidence thing.
So, I set out to create the most accurate lure color test possible—using the Sidekick Rig to fish two different colors at the same time, under the same conditions, with no bias.
In this test, I put Terd Ferguson (dark color) vs. New Penny (lighter color) to the ultimate challenge to see which one would get the most strikes.

Conclusion
Each of these tips were under 2 hours of fishing, so we can’t say for certain which color is truly best.
But there did appear to be a pretty clear pattern of the following so far for when each color performed best:
- Terd Ferguson significantly outshined when the sun was bright
- New Penny seemed to do better when the light got lower
There’s of course a lot more testing to come! If you have a lure color you’d like to see tested next, drop a comment below.

At the Texas coast that rig is called a trout rig. It has been used here for decades. But I do like using different lures on them. When you purchase that rig here it generally comes with just white lures.
Thanks for sharing the helpful intel James! Do those rigs come with the lures at the same length, or is one shorter than the other?
Great results of the test . Right now in Wilmington we couldn’t use that rig ,cause the green moss hasn’t release yet . When it does I will try it Thanks
Glad to see that you enjoyed this video!
Awesome rig and test. Thanks for putting that together, Luke. Can you do a detailed vid of that rig? other than the spooking factor, you have twice the chance to catch a fish….and twice the chance to get snagged too, I guess. lol
Still want to try it.
Thanks Anthony! I’ll have a detailed video showing how to tie this rig going live tomorrow.
Yes, this rig comes with higher odds of snags, so it’s best to rig them weedless.
Now that is a fantastic idea. I look forward to giving that rig a try. Always fun to watch you try new ideas.
Thanks David!
Great job exhibiting both colored lures. Under low light clear water I have to try the pink. Funny I was wondering when I was going to set up with that pink lure the club sent me.
Good idea with trying pink.
As a fairly beginner, I love watching these videos. I try to learn as much as I can. Being retired. I get to go every week so I keep practicing.
Thanks for making time to post the nice comment Jesse!
Keep reviewing practice those nuts and don’t over think it. Test yourself using smart map AI. I found for me more goes into learning than doing. It’s true when you really understand you are more confident and it will show as you get the strikes and land them and others ask what are you using. Good luck 🍀👍
Luke, great video and quite a surprise! Before I started watching the video, I really thought that New Penny would be the top producer! Thanks for providing such informative videos!
Thanks for making time to post the nice comment Frank! So glad to see that you enjoyed this video.
Did you happen to have anyone else fishing with you that was only using one or the other color by itself? Using same weight and hook set up, would love to know if a single or a duo setup is more productive, regardless of the lure’s color.
Not yet. My hunch is that if the fish are active, this sidekick rig will catch more fish since it attracts more attention. But for days when the fish are very spooky and not aggressive, the single will surely be the better option.
Very interesting
We’re glad to see that you enjoyed this video
Luke,
Very cool lure test!!
Thanks Denis!
