Gear Mentioned:
There are different styles and brands of popping corks out there.
Popping corks are designed to mimic the sounds of fish feeding on the surface.
The ‘pop’ created by the corks is eerily similar to that of a fish striking bait.
Oval-shaped popping corks do not move as much water as the Cup-shaped design.
I’ve used both types of popping corks on various trips, even experimenting with both on the same trip.
What I’ve found is one is not far and away better than the other.
It comes down to the situation.
As I mentioned above, the Oval-shape displaces less water.
With that said, in calmer conditions, the Oval-shape is the better option.
Another positive to the Oval popping corks is they cover more water in less time than other designs.
There is not much resistance on the cork as you reel it in allowing you to cover more ground and cast it out quickly in less time.
On the other hand, Cupped Popping Corks do a few things that the Oval does not.
Cupped corks displace more water, create more sound, and cause more commotion than the Oval corks.
These types of corks excel on rough, windy days when you need something to spark a bite.
Popping corks are not hard to fish with and can be effective for all skill levels.
You just need to make sure you’re casting it properly.
