If you’ve ever tried working a topwater lure from a seated position in your kayak, you know it’s a whole different ball game. Things can get awkward fast—rod angles, lure movement, and even your setup can all play a role in whether you’re catching fish or just casting practice.
I’ve been there, and trust me, I know the struggle. But don’t worry—I’ve got your back! In my latest video, I’m breaking down everything you need to know to retrieve a topwater lure proficiently, even if you’re sitting down.
Here’s a sneak peek of what you’ll learn:
- How to position your rod and manage slack for that perfect walk-the-dog action.
- The simple adjustment that makes working a lure from a seated position WAY easier.
- My favorite rod and reel setup to keep things smooth and hassle-free in tight spaces.
This is one of those techniques that can make or break your fishing day, especially when those topwater strikes are firing off.

Thanks for the great information for using lures on a kayak in the seated position Pat!
Great tips, thanks Pat!!!
Thank you Pat 👍
Very good info Pat, I had my rod butt hitting my arm last time I worked a top water lure. Now I can try it with the butt above my fore arm as you mentioned! Looks to be more effective and comfortable! Thank you!
I actually started doing that because of my bad shoulder. Allowing me to drop it a bit relieved some pressure and it didn’t hurt as bad at the end of the day.
Good video Thanks and nice to know I’m not the only guy uncomfortable fishing too waters from the yak….thought it was my being left handed😎
We got that question a few times. Typically if one person asks, there’s others that are having the same issue.
Hope this helps!
Great training Pat, about 1.19 on video looked like a huge puffer went by on right side. lol
I saw that when I was editing the video. You never know what’s going to show up next!
Enjoyed watching the instructions from a top water guru! Good details.
Thank you Ray!

Stuff we all need to know and wish we knew sooner!
