Lure Switch That SAVED My Beach Fishing Trip
- By: Tony Acevedo

On this trip I did some beach fishing for trout and snook using 2 main lures:
4″ Mulligan Paddletail & Prawn USA Original
One definitely outperformed the other, which you will see in this video, along with some overall tactics for targeting fish in the surf with artificial lures.
Enjoy!

1/4 ounce isn’t much in the surf. Could you go heavier, or is the point to have a slower glide on the way down?
I would say use whatever works for the conditions you’re fishing in order to feel the lure and also be able to feel when it hits the bottom. Only fishing in maybe 2 to 3 ft of water. For the gulf coast, these were pretty rough conditions, but on the Atlantic side it can be a lot rougher so you may want to go 1/2oz or 3/4 depending on surf conditions.
Great info on the surf fishing with light gear.
can’t wait to give it a try next time I visit the west coast.
tight lines
Thanks Jon!
Tony where were you three at? East Coast?
This is the Gulf Coast near Ft Myers.
I have used the gold spoon with a lot of success in the surf.
Good option as well!
You make it look easy!
I was out here for a couple hours and only had about 30 minutes of action once I switched lures. Just the good stuff on video haha
Nice report Tony. Why not use just straight 30lb leader? The chop in the surf most certainly makes the leader very hard to detect.
Thanks Dell! Thicker line gets caught in the waves and current more than thinner line, so I like to keep as much of my rig thin. No structure out there to get broken off on so really no need for heavy line aside for abrasion resistance for the snook.
Great info. Those are my go to lures for redfish and trout here in PC.
Work great all around!
Crazy that something as simple as a lure style can make a difference.
For sure! They were keyed in on shrimp
Great information
Thanks Eduardo!
Gotta throw what they are smacking
For sure!
