The South shore of Long Island, NY is a perfect reference for the benefits of reducing/banning commercial fishing for menhaden (bunker). A thriving fishery declined significantly late last century and then the menhaden ban was put in place. Since then, it is like a National Geographic episode with acres of mehaden followed by tuna, stripers, wales, dolphin, etc.

Joe and Phil, thank you so much for airing this and getting the word out. Every angler in VA knows of the problem but we feel almost powerless to help. I don’t think you will find an angler who won’t tell you the striped bass population is greatly diminished from what it was 10-20 years ago. Along with redfish, speckled trout, cobia, flounder and even blue crabs. They all rely on menhaden as a primary food source.
