Fall is an exciting time to be on the water!
The fish are feeding more and for longer periods of the day, the weather is nicer and this is one of the best chances you will have to catch a trophy. However, there are some tackle changes to consider if you’re going to make that happen.
In this video I’ll share what fish are keyed in on and show you what lures I recommend for the fall season along with how to use them.
Enjoy!

Key Takeaways
- Fish are dialed in on baitfish schools coming through that include some of the largest bait of the year.
- Fall fish will be on the move, so you need lures that will cover a lot of water and be versatile enough to change with the conditions.
- Start of in the mornings with a topwater like the Moonwalker until the sun comes over the horizon.
- Switch to a subsurface lure like the Skinny Lipper if it’s shallow or a twitch lure like the Polk County Tweaker rigged on a jig head if the water is more than 4 feet or so once the sun comes up.
- For power fishing a large area in the least amount of time, use a large paddle tail like the 5″ Mulligan Bomber.
- When you find an area holding a lot of fish or you’re finding fish that are skittish, a Jerk Shad does a great job of working the area.

Jighead on a jerk shad. Not the way I usually fish jerk shads but makes sense for flounder! I’ll have to give that a try. Thanks Pat
Pat will be putting that all to work – Buxton/Pamlico sound end of September…. cannot wait!
that was some good info. Thanks Pat
Awesome tips Pat.
Good stuff. When I clicked on 5 inch mulligan on your post Pat I was able to purchase!
Awesome! That is a great lure. It’s going to be wildly popular
Is a 4/0 hook going to be large enough for the 5″ Mulligan or should we go to a 5/0? The Hoss Helix isn’t available in a 5/0 yet. Thanks, Pat
The 4/0 does work. That’s what I’ve been using with it
