Is This The BEST Sheepshead Rig For Live Shrimp?
- By: Luke Simonds

Sheepshead LOVE structure, but fishing live shrimp around mangroves usually comes with a price… snags, lost rigs, and lost bait.
I created this video to show you a great weedless shrimp rig for sheepshead that lets you fish tight to pilings, trees, and rocks without constant snags.
If you want to fish where sheepshead actually live without fighting your gear all day, this setup makes it much easier.
And if you enjoy seeing sheepshead catching action, you’re going to love this video because the bite was extremely good.
Featured Gear
- Hooks: Eagle Claw Plain Shank
- Weights: Bullet Weight
- Rod: Slot Machine Rod (Medium)
- Reel: Otis 2500
- Line: 10 lb Daiwa J-Braid
- Leader: 15 lb Ande Premium Mono
Key Takeaways
- Why most shrimp rigs fail when fished tight to mangroves, and what changes everything.
- The small rigging detail that keeps the hook point protected without killing your hook-ups.
- When going weedless helps, and when it quietly works against you.
- The bite cue that matters most when targeting sheepshead around structure.
- Why this setup keeps producing even when snapper and other fish are constantly pecking at your bait.
Final Thoughts:
This weedless shrimp rig works because it lets you fish where the fish actually live without constantly re-tying or losing gear.
The setup itself is simple, affordable, and adaptable depending on how the fish are positioned. The bigger key is always finding the right area first, then using a rig that allows you to fish it efficiently.

Are prawn Jr’s. Good for sheep’s head round pier pilings. Headed down to juno beach pier.
Sheepshead are very picky eaters, so it’s tough to get them on artificials on a consistent basis… live crabs or live shrimp has much higher odds of success.
But as for lures, the prawn usa jr bounced along the bottom has caught me more sheepshead than anything else (while also catching a ton of other species like redfish, snook, snapper, grouper, etc).
What size hook are you using
I was using a size 2 hook that trip since those shrimp were small.
Thanks
Thanks Luke for the great information always appreciated
Our pleasure James!
well done
Thanks Ronald!
Why the weight at all? As much as I use shrimp in the backwater, WE never catch sheep against the brush or mangroves. We usually catch them around structure, docks and oyster beds freelining unless in deeper water. Then use maybe a small 1/8 oz weight. So, they seem to be in sandy areas too?
The weight helps get the shrimp on the bottom quicker where most of the feeding activity takes place.
Great video and most definitely looks like you got plenty for dinner and a boat load of fun to …. ! Thanks for sharing Luke and job well done ….. !
Our pleasure Thomas!
