Ok, I’ll admit it…
I’ve walked over someone else’s trash without picking it up before… completely ignored it like it wasn’t there.
Guilty.
However, it’s getting tougher and tougher for me to ignore it.
I’m not sure if it’s just a sign I’m getting older with kids of my own (I’m currently trying my best to teach my own kids how to respect our waterways, land, and natural resources), but seeing trash near my fishing spots has been bothering more than ever before.
Not only that, I feel like I am seeing more and more of it (and I’m sick and tired of just blaming other people for being litterbugs).
Sadly, no matter how much we blame other people, and no matter how much we hope that the government will come in and clean up the mess, it’s up to US as fishermen to clean up our fisheries, beaches, piers, etc.
So Luke and I decided to do something about it, and we hope you will join us.
It’s called The Trash Slam Challenge, it’s 100% FREE to play, and you can win FREE Salt Strong gear for every time you complete the challenge (while supplies last).
Here’s all you have to do to win:
- Fill THREE small bags of trash from your fishing area, aka “The Trash Slam”
- Catch a fish and take a picture of the fish with your trash bags (Any fish will do, and feel free to have more than one fish in the pic)
- Post the picture of your three trash bags and fish on Fish Strong (either the free mobile app or the main website)
- We contact you to get your shirt size and your address so we can send you a free Salt Strong shirt

Joe is this still being honored? I just found this article and like several others have posted I always leave with a bag of trash and have done so for more than 30 years! Grandad taught me that lesson and I love the look I get at tournaments walking around picking up bags of trash around the dock and marina. We share this sport with some great people who usually pitch in to help with a little motivation! I’ll never forget when I first started taking my daughter fishing she asked me what I was doing and why was I picking up other peoples trash. I handed her a bag and told her to help me out we picked up three bags of trash that day and have done so ever since. But not without her questioning why again and again Until she got old enough to realize the importance for herself.
This might be the best idea yall have come up with yet. I started doing this with my kids last year when we would go out, and at first they thought it was weird and kept asking why we had to pick up litter that wasnt ours. Now I cant leave the house without them telling me we need a trash bag. Its crazy how it can become a good habit pretty soon if you just get people started. Thanks for getting it started, no telling how far itll go.

Great idea! My 85 year old Dad, grabbed a plastic bottle off the ground and looked around. There was more to be done in one of my favorite fishing spots.
I’ll be taking my son-in-law and his dad out this Friday to that same location. I’ll put them in my kayaks and I’ll spend some time on shore cleaning up a great fishing spot!

Joe & Luke, this has been something I have been doing for years. Every time I go out, doesn’t matter if I’m yakin or wading, I always come back with trash. Consider asking anglers to use clear bags so we can all see whats “out there”! Consider a prize for the most unique piece of junk found.
