3 Hacks To Using A Hobie Mirage Drive in Shallow Water

http://hobie%20mirage%20drive%20shallow%20water

For a long time, I avoided Hobie kayaks with the Mirage Drive…

I spend a lot of time chasing redfish in really shallow water, and I wasn’t sure if the pedals would allow me to do that.

But now that I have a Hobie with the Mirage Drive, I’ve found a couple of ways to get around what I initially perceived as a problem.

Want to see how I do it?

Watch the video below.

Hi Tony. I’ve had a Hobie 12′ Pro Angler for 5 or 6 years and loved it. It’s a real fishing machine. I used a 6′ push/stake out pole and a handy 14″ one hand paddle more than the paddle that came with it in shallow water. I just got the new Hobie 12′ Pro Angler 360 and love it. There is a little learning curve to get use to the new 360 Mirage drive. Quick Tip. When setting up the new PA I went and ran my hand down my old stake out pole and got a bunch of fiberglass slivers in my hand, very uncomfortable. Thought about how to fix it and had some heat shrink tubing that fit the pole and put it on except for the last 10-12″, no more fiberglass splinters.

Great Ideas from you Joe. I have an Expandacraft and I use my Min Kota to move around . I sit higher than in a regular Kayak. I like trolling and standing up and paddling or polling . Being I see Targets before they see me. help tons
When heading home my Tohatsu 3.5 Hp is great .I am Dry all the time . Not counting Rain showers. I have learned to fish in Florida wholly from the teaching from Salt Strong and 30 years fishing walleye.
Best Regards

Good info Tony. One more thing I noticed about the peddle drive, if you’re on a drift and the water is deep enough you can put the fins straight down and turn the rudders perpendicular to the direction you’re going and those fins will create drag and slow you down considerably. Just be aware when fighting a fish, especially reds, that if if goes under the boat the fins are down there. Lost a good fish that way.
