First, let’s start with the pros.
Pros of the Bottom Sweeper Jigs
- Small, compact, and simple to use (no need to tie a complicated rig)
- They sit balanced on the bottom with the hook point up, so your bait will be facing up and your chances of hooking up are increased
- Since they sit upright on the bottom, they’re less likely to get snagged
Cons of the Bottom Sweeper Jigs
- The paint will come off (this happens to all painted jig heads, but you can purchase them unpainted)
- They’re a little more pricey than other jig heads
- There isn’t much of a hook shank on the jig, so it can be tough to rig bigger baits

Tony, I was looking for a heavier jig head for pompano fishing in the surf. Thanks for turning me on to these. I made them a little more enticing to eat bu tiring on some buck tail and tonsil. Will let you know how they work when the Canaveral National Seashore reopens.
Sweeper Jigs: Pros, it’s a good product. Cons, lots of catfish!
I avoid shrimp because it usually draws in every other species you don’t want to catch. Fiddler crabs and blue crab is my go-to when using these jigs for sheepshead and drum.

Hey Tony! Great review. I know Dan S. who developed them for use in NJ for tog and sheepshead. He is an expert at it and these jigs work. While you never know what fish will bite these are a must for a tackle box. BTW….that looked like a great spot to catch sheepshead! Tight quarters but effective!!

I’ve been using them up in NJ for a while. There are other variations by other manufacturers but Capt. Dan has perfected it.
I agree, these are so nicely balanced compared to the other tog jigs I have tried. The hooks are super sharp, too.
