I’m looking at the Slot Machine rod and see several things that, in my opinion, could be improved. I own several St Croix rods that I like, but I found several things that I consider design flaws. The Slot Machine shares these flaws. Fist, the reel seat tightening nut is at the bottom of the reel. This means your hand will be touching the nut and when fighting a fish can loosen the nut. That doesn’t happen when the nut is at the top of the reel. Second, the cork handle is a sharp cut where the bottom of your palm rests. Again, when fighting a fish that edge can rub your palm raw. A graduated edge would solve this problem. I built it up by wrapping tennis handle grip so there is a smooth transition. Solved the problem for me, but I don’t understand why this wasn’t considered in the original design. Maybe it’s just me and nobody else has considered this a problem, but I look for these things when considering a rod.

Thanks for sharing the feedback James.

Can you help me understand which rod with a nut at the top of a reel you have found is better than bottom tightening nuts? The only times I’ve had issues with the nuts getting loose while fishing is when I’ve used rods with nuts that tighten from the top (seems like the choice is between the fingers touching the nut on every cast with a top nut vs. the palm being on the nut while fighting a fish).

The bottom handle edge is far down enough to make sure that it shouldn’t tough anyone’s palm while in normal use (assuming the fisherman is holding the rod with the reel’s arm above the pinky and ring fingers). The reason for it is to allow for the bottom grip to be thick enough to allow for two-handed casters to be able to cast all day without their hand that’s on the bottom getting sore from having to hold a thin part of the rod… the thicker cork grip is nice and soft and spreads the load making for a super-comfortable casting experience.

Note: Have you tried the Slot Machine yet? I don’t see any orders for it in your account.

Just in case I asked in the wrong blog. Are any plans to offer this new rod in a two-piece with a case for travel?

Interesting question, Lee! Aside from the convenience of traveling, what benefits do you feel the 2-piece rods offer?

I’ve seen a few different Insider Members ask for a 2-piece Slot Machine option, and we will definitely consider this! The goal of the Slot Machine is to maximize performance (Casting Distance, Durability, Sensitivity & Lure Action). Even with a well-designed ferrule joint system, my initial fear would be we’d be sacrificing Performance for the sake of Convenience. While there are some High Quality Travel Rods out there (such as the TFO Traveler), it inherently will not feel the same as a 1-piece rod.

I’ll definitely chat with Luke and the Rod Manufacturing Team soon to see what we can come up with next.

In the video you mention matching the reel to the rod.
All I heard was best with a 2500 reel.
Is there a difference in makes as far as performance, spool size etc or all 2500 geometrically the same just some higher quality workmanship and materials?

I’m working on refining the reel recommendations with this rod, as it doesn’t have to only be a 2500 sized reel. Reel sizing by various manufacturers is intrinsic to that specific manufacturer (i.e. a Shimano, Daiwa and Penn 2500 all have slightly different spool sizes).

As a good general guideline, any Spinning Reel that has an Outer Spool Diameter of 1.75″—2″ and the reel weighing would pair very well with this Slot Machine Rod!

Yall make me laugh talking about socks and baby this thing.. i get that its a quality tool for mission specific inshore lure fishing and you want to take care of it. But to me tool is the operative word when talking about the fishing pole. Like that other guy said its a fishing pole if you are using it like its meant to be rather than just admiring it like some collector item its going to take a significant amount of abuse be that knocking around in the boat tangling on other rods, lines, doors, branches, mangroves cielings, hopefully not fans but it happens, sand, concrete, stepped on etc(in my case being run over by a bike or car from time to time isnt out of the realm of possibilities). Anyway, yea its safe to say im rough on equipment and maybe im the odd man out here but my philosophy is when i buy a cool new toy i fully intend to use it to its full potential as much as possible and wear and tear (if not full blown abuse) is an ubfortunate part of that equation. As such ive learned a lot of creative solutions to keep my toys in the game over the years. And im super stoked for this thing to release and im praying like crazy that when it does i have enough money to scoop one up. Fot anyone thats interested messge me in a year to find out how it holds up against the torture test that is my life. Lol… no lie words cant describe how excited i am for a light weight balanced rod that doesnt have split grips or the word light in the action description that fully rigged will weigh less than a whopper and not destroy my weedless soft plastics by the handful just from changing fishing spots throughout the day..

Think i wrote enough for now tight lines yall✌️🎣😁

What is the length of the butt section? It looks similar to the previous Bull Bay custom I purchased from y’all. I mostly kayak fish and prefer the shorter butt sections, and for me, the Bull Bay is a good length for both boat and kayak fishing.

The Butt Section is 8.5″ in length. We found that to be the best overall length in terms of balancing with various reels, and not getting in the way while working a lure.
