Trolling for blackfin tuna was absolutely epic the first time, so we had to get out and try it again while the bite is still on!

Tuna Setup #1:
- Rod: Shimano Talis Heavy
- Reel: Daiwa BG MQ 6000
- Mainline: 30lb Daiwa J-Braid
- Leader: 40lb Ande Monofilament Leader
- Lure: Rapala X-Rap
Tuna Setup #2:
- Rod: Bull Bay Brute Force
- Reel: Daiwa BG 4500
- Mainline: 30lb Daiwa J-Braid
- Leader: 40lb Ande Monofilament
- Lure: Bucktail Jig
Before you think about going out and doing this type of fishing yourself, you need to have a few things in order.
I strongly recommend you try this with someone who knows what they are doing first.
Don’t try this alone.
Also, please have the proper safety gear in place including life vests and other necessities.
Just as I was filming the intro for this report – both rods started shooting off.
We DOUBLED up!!
I desperately tried to keep both fish controlled while fighting one and keeping the line tight on the other.
But I ended up tangling myself in my own fishing line and losing the second fish.
There is never a dull moment out here kayak fishing for tuna.
After gaining some ground on this fish and clearing all obstructions from around me, I was ready to land it.
Once I got close to the kayak, I could see it was tail hooked.
But I had a bigger gaff out there with me this time.
I got that fish in the boat and set out more lines behind me.
A little while later, I heard another one of my rods go off and a fish was on.
But I immediately made a critical error.
I stopped peddling the kayak when I grabbed the rod to set the hook.
Then I tried to fight the fish too early before I had set the drag correctly.
As a result, I failed to keep tension on the line which causes me to lose the fish.

Recommended with pro and cons: A leash to your kayak, It is unbelievable how quickly your kayak can drift away in wind and current if you get tossed out. You may not be able to swim for it. We are not always holding a leashed paddle in a Mirage Drive kayak.
As a former power boater off Fort Lauderdale, FL I cannot stress the need for a safety flag. When a kayak is in a wave trough it is the only thing visible, A bright red or orange hat is a good thing to wear as well. BE SEEN. I saw so many kayakers out a couple miles with no flag, no PFD and alone, Recipe for disaster.
