3 Saltwater Lures to Use (and 3 to Skip) [PODCAST]

Ever walked into a tackle shop and felt completely overwhelmed? You know, like that “deer in headlights” moment where you’re staring down endless aisles of lures, wondering where to even begin? Trust me, you’re not alone. The world of fishing lures can feel like a black hole—especially if you’re new to inshore saltwater fishing.

But don’t worry, Luke and I have your back! In this week’s Salt Strong Nation Podcast, we’re cutting through the noise to help you save time, money, and maybe even a bit of your sanity.

What We’re Covering in This Episode

  • The 3 Lures You Should ALWAYS Have in Your Arsenal – These aren’t just hype; they’re proven to catch fish year-round.
  • The 3 Lures to AVOID – Stop throwing money at overpriced, overhyped lures that never leave the tackle box.
  • How to Rig & Fish These Lures – Because even the best lures are useless if you’re not rigging and fishing them the right way.
  • Why Simplicity Wins – Spoiler alert: You don’t need a suitcase full of gear to catch fish consistently.

This isn’t just another list of “must-have” lures—it’s a simple, actionable game plan. Whether you’re brand-new to fishing or just tired of hauling around a ton of gear, this episode is going to simplify your setup and boost your confidence on the water.

So, Why Listen to This Episode?

We’re not here to throw out random opinions. These are the exact lures that Luke, myself, and thousands of our Insider Members rely on every day to catch redfish, trout, snook, and more. You’ll even hear Luke share some clever rigging hacks (and maybe a few jabs from me about lures that catch more fishermen than fish).

By the end, you’ll have a clear, no-nonsense plan to attract more fish—without breaking the bank or cluttering your tackle bag.

Curious to know if the 1/4 ounce jig heads are 2/0 or 3/0. Thanks

The ones I like best for the lures mentioned in this video are 2/0. Here’s a link to see rigging details in case you’re not yet using the 90 degree load trick: https://www.saltstrong.com/fishing-school/intermediate-module/lures-hooks/

Great discussion, right now I am between that beginner and intermediate angler. Those are the exact lures I have in my bag along with several different weight hooks. The only other thing I pack is #5 circle hooks to throw out a piece of cut mullet. If they won’t take the paddle, the prawn, or a piece of cut mullet after 10 minutes I am in the wrong spot and it’s time to move!

Everything that relates to bass fishing is what is duplicated in inshore or what I call backwater fishing! Grew up fishing for bass as a kid also fishing offshore in the Fla keys! When I started fishing inshore in the keys as a kid I used all the techniques that I used for bass! And that was significant seeing that I won the MET tournament bass release trophy while I was in high school in Fla! All the techniques that SS has in their videos will be very helpful for you, no matter if it’s fresh or saltwater! Use the info wisely, it can only help! Good luck, remember have fun!

Hi Carey! To me, the most overlap is between Snook and Largemouth Black Bass. Since Snook is a rare catch in Texas, don’t overlook Snook catching content from Florida waters.

In my area, the white bucktail is my #1 go to lure, then the paddletail (with different rigging options) then the Skinny Lipper or the MirrorLure #18-17MR. I can also rig the paddletail to the bucktail that makes a irresistable bait.
