How Durable Is The Alabama Leprechaun? Putting It To The Redfish Test

What’s the most important quality you look for in a fishing lure?
Obviously, you want a lure that catches fish.
It doesn’t matter what it costs, how good the action is, or how realistic-looking a lure is… if it doesn’t catch fish, there’s no point!
But high up on my list is durability.
I hate going through several packs of lures every time I go out on the water because they get torn up.
And I hate having to rig up a new soft plastic after every fish I catch… it wastes time and money.
So I was really eager to see how the Alabama Leprechaun jerk shad would hold up.
I just got a few packs not too long ago and took them out on the water for the first time.
Want to see if they passed the durability test?

As it turns out, these lures are super durable!
I caught multiple redfish on one single lure and I still have that lure rigged up for the next time I go out.
And clearly, they catch fish, too.
I rigged them up on a 1/8 oz 3/0 Owner TwistLock Hook and was casting to points and shorelines in about one to two feet of water.
I was retrieving them with a mix of twitches and pauses.
You can get these lures here and get the Owner TwistLock hooks here.

Where can I buy this lures ???? I’ve looked for them everywhere even in the sop her in this site, NOBODY seems to have any.
Any thoughts??
They were recently added to our online store (only place to get them). Here’s a direct link: https://shop.saltstrong.com/products/alabama-leprechaun-jerk-bait
They catch/stand up to bass too! Just got my first pack and wanted to check out the action prior to taking them on the bay boat. Rigged w/ the 1/8 oz owner twist lock. Caught a bass on the 2d cast, caught a bass on the 3d cast, no tears and ready for the saltwater. Solid!
They sure do! My first time using them I took them to the lake and bass were slamming them. Must have caught 6 or 7 before having to rig up a new one.
Yes Tony I have to agree they are considerably durable considering they are not made with the new plastic that zman and other lure makers are starting to use the only thing I do to them differently because of the murky water here where I fish is I add a small rattle and add more scent with procure inshore scent being my choice caught a couple reds and flounder so far all on one bait pretty tough thanks for the info and all you do????
Good tips! I like the gold flash which can definitely help in dirty water.
Tony this is off topic but would you still recommend the Calico Jack med rod for an inexpensive rod? If not what do you like now?
Hey Ron,
I havent used one in a while (ever since they stopped carrying them in stores). Now I have been using All Star Classic Inshore rods (Medium Heavy) or the St. Croix Triumph Rods (Medium).
Ok thank you.
Why do you like the ST. Croix Triumph over the TFO Professional?
Not sure why but my earlier response was posted as anonymous. So thanks for the response.
I haven’t used any of the TFO rods yet.
So what will it be – leprechauns or the old stand by camos?
I’ll always have my Gulps on hand, but these hold up way better than Gulp does. Not quite Zman, but right in the middle.
I love those Gulp Camos! So how are they compared to those Tony?
The action is slightly different. The gulp jerk shads tend to spin a bit more which is possibly because of the softness of the material. These are slightly stiffer which makes them stay pretty straight which I like. I plan to do a side by side test one of these days with one rigged up on one rod, and the new one rigged up on another. Nothing can really beat the scent from the gulp though. Ive caught a 40′ red on the gulp jerk shad by just letting it soak on the bottom without moving it.
Thanks Tony, I’ve had similar luck on soaking the gulps. I’m going to try the Leprechaun out this weekend in Beaufort’s murky water. Stay tuned.
