This Antique Squid Fishing Lure Has An Incredible Story

A lot of you guys have asked me what that old wooden lure is in the background of my videos…

I’m glad you asked — it’s got an incredible story.

Obviously it doesn’t look like a normal fishing lure (besides the fact that it’s wooden and handmade) — it’s got two rows of several barbless hooks going around the tail.

That’s because it’s an egi, or a squid jig.

My grandpa got it back in WWII from a land far, far away…

This egi was handcrafted in Japan and, as my grandfather told us when we were kids, he had to shoot down a bunch of planes just to get his hands on this rare lure.

Of course, that part wasn’t true, but he was a colonel in the Marines and served as a fighter pilot in WWII and the Korean War.

He brought back several fishing lures, including this egi here, and Luke and I are blessed to have several of them.

Eging (jigging with egis), is still a popular way to catch squid today and modern-day egis still look really similar to this one!

Below is a picture of a current egi, as well as a video about eging.
