Jig head choice is often overlooked.
Most anglers focus on weight and never think about how head shape changes what a lure actually does underwater.
So I created this video to break down underwater footage of two popular jig head styles so you can choose the right one with confidence and avoid wasting money on the wrong tackle.
Featured Gear:
Key Takeaways:
- Most anglers focus on weight… but something else decides what your lure does once it’s down there.
- One jig head shape creates far more movement than the other, and it is not obvious until you see it underwater.
- Depending on where you fish, one of these jig heads could be costing you bites without you even realizing it.
Final Thoughts:
Round eye and football jig heads both have a place; the key is knowing when to use each.
Instead of choosing jig heads by weight alone, think about bottom contact and how much movement you want from your lure.
Make that switch, and you’ll spend less time guessing and more time fishing with confidence.

Job Well done Pat and thank you for sharing with us and the fishing community ……. !
Thank you sir!
Good information. I never really thought about the shape of the jig head. Like you mentioned many people focus on weight and not on the shape. Will definitely consider what you presented.
Definitely a lot that goes into it. Hopefully this will help you out!
Nice perspective of how the jig head will affect the retrieve based on the bottom. Thanks Pat!
Glad you found it helpful!
One year after reading an article in florida sportsman mag about different jighead styles and what each is best in different bottom features i found it amazing in the wide assortment of jighead styles there are and your right there are alot of anglers that don’t know this but I try and stick to the basics because like lure color choice it can be a bit overwhelming and while I do have a good assortment of different styles and weights I found in my fishing experience that only a few select are truely needed but I always carry an assortment just in case because if you have ever fished for any good length of time you will finally realize fishing is a sport where conditions are ALWAYS changing so its always good to be prepared for any scenario because you just never know great info as always Pat and thanks for it and all you do😉👍
I’m with you on that. Try to keep it simple, I like to use things that can work in different situations to reduce what bring with me. But there are things that do one thing really well and I have a few of those too.
