How To Use A Dehooker To Unhook Catfish (Without Getting Spined)

Using a dehooker is the easiest way to get catfish off of the line without getting spined.

You don’t have to handle them and get any of their slime on you, plus it’s super quick to unhook them so you can get back to fishing for your target species.

In this video, we’ve got Capt. Mark “Hollywood” Johnson of FloridaKeysFunFishing.com demonstrating the proper use of a dehooker.

It’s great for getting catfish off of the line, but can also be used for other fish you’d rather not touch, such as toothy sharks, trout, snappers, or mackerel.

You’ll learn:

  • The correct way to use a dehooker
  • The big mistake most people make when using a dehooker (unless you want to get slapped in the face by a catfish, you definitely don’t want to do this)
  • And much more

To unhook a catfish with a dehooker, follow these three steps:

Step 1: Put the first bend of the dehooker around the hook.

Step 2: Pull the leader and dehooker away from each other until the leader and hook are on the same plane.

The dehooker should be in the middle of the hook.

(See the image at the top of this post for an example.)

Step 3: Flip the fish away from you.

Unless you want a catfish to the face, never flip the fish toward you.

A dehooker is one tool that Capt. Hollywood never leaves the dock without because it’s so easy to use to unhook catfish.

It’s very unlikely you’ll get spined, plus you can quickly release catfish and resume fishing for your target species.

You can get a dehooker from Amazon here.
