We drove through the entire night to chase down nearshore blackfin tuna from kayaks!
This is a bucket list fish for me that I’ve always wanted to reel in from my kayak.
See how we got it done in the video below!!

Before you think about going out and doing this type of fishing yourself, you need to have a few things in order.
I strongly recommend you try this with someone who knows what they are doing first.
Don’t try this alone.
Also, please have the proper safety gear in place including life vests and other necessities.
We got out to about 50 feet of water ready with big Rapala X-Raps to drop down for these fish.
After trolling for a while, I finally hooked into my first fish of the day.
It was absolute chaos from that point on.
There was a lot of kayak traffic out there but everyone could not have been nicer.
We’re all out there chasing the same thing.
I fought this fish for a while and it just kept digging down trying to shake the hook free.
You need to have the right gear in place or these fish will overpower you.
I was outmatched in terms of the gaff I had to use.
It is so important not to gaff the hook or the line or else the fish can pop off.
Eventually, I gaffed the fish and got it in the kayak!
Not bad for my first trip targeting these nearshore blackfin tuna!!

So glad that you enjoyed it Jim! Thanks for watching!
what was your rod reel line set up in this video matt?
I go over that in the next video. 💪
Short answer. Heavy rods and 30# braid w 40# mono leader.
Matt, I had to laugh at the Fluster Cluck with the rods, other lines, lures – then the fish & gaff – It looked like what I would probably go through out there! Great job working through it ALL and getting your FIRST of the season! You gave a whole new meaning to “sliming your yak”!
Oh man! LOL. It was a disaster for a bit! I didn’t know if I was ever gonna get him in! lol
We had so much fun though! Thanks for watching Neal!
