➡Get the 7′ Heavy Fitzgerald Stunner HD

A lot of our Insider Members have started venturing nearshore and offshore for kingfish, red snapper, grouper, or really anything within 20 or so miles from shore.

In turn, lots of requests have come in to add a stronger, heavy-duty offshore fishing rod to our tackle shop.

We’ve got the larger size reels in the shop covered and now we’ve got offshore fishing rods from Fitzgerald.

Stunner HD Series

Fitzgerald introduced their Stunner HD Series of Fishing Rods that are designed to withstand and reel in some heavy fish from deep depths.

The 7′ Heavy is perfect for cobia, grouper, red snapper, or even over slot snook fishing, and not to mention, tarpon.

The thing that separates this rod from the rest is it is not solely a graphite or carbon blank.

Stunner HD Rods are 80/20 split between graphite and fiberglass (E-Glass).

That actually allows Fitzgerald to add fiberglass in the mix to enhance the structural integrity of the rod blank.

Most rods nowadays are built using different grades or qualities of graphite.

While graphite is very strong, it’s lightweight, and sensitive to the touch which is what is so appealing to inshore anglers.

But when it comes to offshore fishing, the incorporation of fiberglass in a rod blank only works in your favor.

Fiberglass rods can handle a heavy load and take on lots of pressure graphite and carbon rods would not be able to withstand.

Guides & Reel Seat

Another element of this rod to note is that it is quite parabolic for the materials.

Fitzgerald incorporated American Tackle Guides on the Stunner HD Series.

American Tackle Guides are a quad-leg design that allows the blank to flex along with the guide frame.

That means there are no flat spots or break points at all in the rod.

With other types of guides, they create flat points when the rod is under a load because the guide stays straight.

This creates break points all over the rod.

Quad-leg designed guides bend with the rod to provide enhanced stability and eliminate those weak points.

Furthermore, the reel seat on the Stunner HD Series is crafted out of aluminum.

The last thing you want when fighting a giant offshore fish is your reel spinning on the reel seat.

Fitzgerald implemented a channel-lock aluminum seat with double-locking rings.

Conclusion

You should feel confident in your gear every time you hit the water.

Especially if you are miles offshore, gear failure means the end of your long-awaited offshore fishing trip.

These rods are now available in our online tackle shop in either a 7′ Heavy or a 7’4 Extra-Heavy.

I have a Seigler SG Lever Drag, would the 6’6″ Heavy conventional Stunner HD be too big for this reel?

I think one of those lure weight ranges must be wrong.

What is the 7 foot good for 4 to 8 oz lures I see 20 to 50 lbs

Will you be casting very heavy lures with this rod, or working the rod in a vertical fashion (i.e. bottom fishing, bouncing bucktails, etc.).

The 7’0″ Heavy is rated 3-8oz and the 7’4″ Xtra-Heavy is rated 3/4-5oz. But I genuinely don’t think there is much a difference between the 2 for several reasons:

1.) You can just as easily drop a 2oz Bucktail Jig on the 7’0″ Heavy Rod for Cobia, as you could use a 16oz Egg Sinker + Bait on the same rod for Red Snapper

2.) The 7’4″ Xtra-Heavy Power model lists a lower ounce rating than the Heavy Power model. That simply wouldn’t make sense, since they are made out of the same types of material, with the 7’4″ Xtra-Heavy being a stronger/thicker blank.

With all of this in mind, unless you plan on trying to cast 4-6 oz (which is not recommended with this type of rod), I personally think lure oz ratings are a moot point when it comes to these types of rods.

Where are these rods manufactured?

To the best of my knowledge, these are made overseas. But not 100% sure whether they are made in China, Vietnam, Malaysia or otherwise.
