When to use it.

Featured Gear
- Lure 1: Prawn USA Original
- Lure 2: Prawn USA JR
- Rigging 1: Hoss Helix Hook (weedless)
- Rigging 2: Hoss Weedless Football Jig
- Rod: Slot Machine Medium Heavy
Key Takeaways
- Most strikes happen on the fall… not the twitch
- Your retrieve should match fish activity and water clarity
- A natural glide will outfish extra “action” almost every time
- Rigging correctly = more fish per lure + fewer snags
- Positioning (flats, docks, reefs) matters just as much as the lure
Final Thoughts
This is one of those lures that can feel inconsistent… until you understand what actually matters.
Because once you dial in the glide…
Match your retrieve to the conditions…
And rig it the right way…
Everything starts to click.
And when it does…
This becomes one of the most reliable lures you can throw.

This is lights out great Pat, thanks for compiling so many classics from the archive. Like getting a greatest hits package. Well done!
thanks
How do I get free lures to test?
Every month we do what’s called a tackle tester, that’s where we will give away free lures to our Insiders. An email will be sent out around the second week of the month letting you know what that month’s give away will be so look out for those.
Thanks Pat! I’m rethinking about using the football jighead more.
The football jig works best on hard bottom, when there’s grass it had a tendency to catch more of it. That’s when I’ll use the Round Eye jig Head.
I consider myself a rookie fisherman. Thanks to these videos, and Salt Strong, I am improving.
So glad to hear that Alejandro!
We’ve been fishing the prawn under popping corks with great results. Light jig or #3 inshore live bait hook with no added weight. Killer rig for specs and reds. Love the prawn!
Thanks for sharing Lee!
Great to see the rigging and retrieve techniques all in one video. My most recent catch on the Prawn was a Bluefish in the St. Lucie river. Everything eats shrimp.
Glad you liked it and yes, everything does eat a shrimp!
Great video, enjoyed having the technique discussion and application in one place.. showing how and when to use this catch ALL prawn. Tight lines!
Glad you liked it!
What size line and brand were you using on off shore fishing for red grouper? Leader used? Weight on prawn? Great video guys
Here’s the full video and blog from that off shore trip. It will have the details there:

Thanks for the video Pat! The prawn jr. is a lure I’ve been wanting to get better at using and this video will certainly help.
It’s one of my favorites! That lure works everywhere!
