Gear Mentioned In The Video:

I’m talking about the WIND and the SUN.

Not only will air temperatures go up and down in the winter, but so will the water temperatures.

These fish are going to move around accordingly.

If you don’t move around with them, you’ll have tough days out on the water.

Sun

The sun plays an overlooked role in wintertime planning.

It determines if the water temperature will slightly rise in areas depending on how exposed the sun is.

On a sunny day, the water temperatures will increase and the fish will tend to move up shallow to feed.

If the sun is blocked on a cloudy day, lots of times those fish will stay deep.

Wind

The bottom line with the wind is looking for wind-protected areas – always!

Wind causes water temperatures to drop in affected areas.

Fish are looking for the warmest possible water in the winter.

The ultimate recipe here is to combine the wind and sun to have them both in your favor in a given spot.

Lure Selection

Everyone has their favorite redfish lures.

But for me, I’m always going to grab a small shrimp imitation.

Pretty much everything eats a shrimp and that is what’s most abundant during winter.

Our Prawn USA Junior is my go-to lure.

If I’m fishing in less than 3 feet of water, I’ll use a super light jighead.

A 1/10 oz. Z-Man Pro ShroomZ jighead or a 1/8-1/16 oz. Hoss Helix Hook is best for the shallows.

Any deeper than 3 feet, and I’ll go with a Hoss Weedless Football Jigheads.

The weight there will determine on current speed and depth.

It’s funny you should talk about how important water temp is because I remember when I joined as just a member in August of 2017 I asked Luke about water temp and back then he told me he didn’t think it was that important which I found quite surprising considering anyone that knows anything about inshore saltwater fishing knows that ALL fish have a certain comfort zone that they feed best in and finding that zone or as close to it as possible is key on finding active fish so obviously water temp is important thus the sun’s exposure is important as well because that’s what warms the water and wind either in the summer cools the water do it is better to fish wind blown shorelines but in winter to get out of the wind as much as possible to find the warmer water but I have always looked for the best water temps and in all my past reports have always mentioned them thanks for the info and all you do😉👍

Great information Pat! One question I have is would you recommend fishing the tide as it is going out? My thinking is the water coming in from the ocean is cold but warms as it sits at hi tide so outgoing will be the warmest.
