What Non-Christians Are Saying About Christians…

http://non-christians%20saying%20about%20christians

It’s Christian report card time… and it’s not pretty…

Two weeks ago, I shared a few key stats from a recent book I had read called, “Rise Of The Nones,” by James Emery White.

In the book, James reveals some of the main descriptors that non-Christians (“The Nones”) used to describe Christians.

Here are just a few:

  • antihomosexual
  • judgemental
  • hypocritical
  • old-fashioned
  • too involved in politics
  • not accepting of other faiths
  • and quite a few more

Fellow Christians, this is our report card… our wake-up call to lead with more LOVE, GRACE, and TRUTH.

Enjoy this episode and let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

To respond to Kevin, where the old and new testaments contradict one another, Christians aspire to the standards Christ set in the new testament. I believe Joe’s point is to encourage us all to embrace that standard and “lead with more LOVE, GRACE, and TRUTH.” His reply to your justifications and your critique of Christians is outstanding.

Following Christ, his example and standards, is not easy. I appreciate the unexpected reminder.
I am very pleased to part of Salt Strong and the greater Christian community.

A revised version. As a long time atheist, I can expand on what some of us think about Christianity and believers. Many of us know a fair amount about the bible, and like me, fully embrace the words of Jesus. However, the history of this religion, is that people consciously pick and choose which of those words and beliefs they actually follow, depending on what seems like personal gain, or convenience.

For many people like me – it’s the continuous and relentless hypocrisy that makes us want to distance ourselves from any religion.

Consistency in the lessons of the bible, seem difficult to reconcile. Thou shalt not kill, turn the other cheek, or eye for an eye, which is it? Dozens of biblical contradictions lead many to question the basic idea of what is positioned the inerrant and true word of God. Although the bible struggles to even agree with itself about what is right on many critical subjects, the primary communication of Christians, is that they are right and everyone else is wrong, and that is off-putting if you are earnestly searching for truth in the world.

An example is that the bible is noticeably bereft of condemnation of abortion, and rife with examples that contradict the notion. Exodus 21:22-25 and Numbers 5:11-31 both refer to the fetus as property, not a sacred life or even a person. Yet where Jesus is unequivocal with his words about helping poor people, sick people, refugees, and praising the heretical Samaritans, modern republican Christianity seems to twist the teaching of the bible on both subjects. Make sure every child is born, then disavow all responsibility to take care of them, make sure they’re healthy and enjoy basic human rights, literally as soon as they’re born.

When it suits their interests, people love to quote Leviticus regarding homosexuality (likely not correctly) and ignore every other proclamation in the old testament, including tattoos, and growing beards and marrying your rapist. Jesus was considerably more adamant about sex after divorce being a mortal sin, than any dubious mention of homosexuality. Yet many who are hostile to homosexuality and believe it a sin – not just excuse, but actively cheer actual outright adultery.

It’s the seemingly deliberate process of ignoring the parts that don’t support a specific worldview, while distorting actual words in an attempt to strengthen an argument that makes it all seem entirely unworthy of support.

Believers are typically born into their religion. Were you born in Saudi Arabia, it’s highly likely you’d be a devout Muslim. The humbling understanding that you’re on a journey, and you don’t understand the universe, no matter what you believe, is not what I observe from most Christians.
