Big Trout Are in Shallow Water – This Plug Catches Them

Big seatrout love shallow water.
In fact, some of the biggest trout we see each year are holding in two feet of water or less, especially around mullet schools and calm conditions.
But there’s a problem most anglers run into.
A lot of suspending plugs simply sink too fast… or they hang up constantly in grass and on the bottom.
So they get tossed aside in favor of soft plastics.
But this lure is different.
And once you understand how it behaves in the water, it’s easy to see why it’s been absolutely dominating big trout.

Key Takeaways
- Big trout often hold extremely shallow
Many of the biggest trout sit in water two feet deep or less, especially when bait like mullet is nearby. - Most suspending plugs sink too quickly
Traditional plugs tend to drop too fast and their hooks easily grab grass or bottom structure in shallow areas. - The Flea Flicker has a unique stance in the water
This lure sinks very slowly with the tail slightly down, creating a posture that looks like a struggling baitfish near the surface. - A natural mullet color can be deadly around bait schools
When trout are feeding around mullet, matching that profile and color can dramatically increase bites. - Less movement gets more strikes
One of the biggest mistakes anglers make is working the lure too aggressively. A slow, smooth glide often produces far more bites. - You don’t have to do much with the retrieve
Just lightly move the rod tip and allow the lure to glide naturally through the water.
Final Thoughts
Sometimes the biggest improvement you can make is actually doing less.
When trout are holding shallow and the water is calm, a subtle presentation can make all the difference.
A slow-sinking plug that glides naturally through the strike zone can trigger bites from fish that ignore more aggressive retrieves.

I used the flea flicker this winter and I’m a believer. Best hard bait I’ve ever used.
While I do have the flea flicker and in ALL the colors you guys had the company produce them make them in right now I seriously doubt the trout in my area of northeast florida are in very shallow water because of a very strong cold front that moved through here on the 15th and 17th sunday night through Tuesday right after a very warm week prior in the mid to high 80s with lows in the 60s to Sunday night with lows in the mid 30s to highs of only the mid 50s in fact today wendsdays high was only about 62 but we are expecting a good warm up but its a gradual one with highs in the mid 80s again by the weekend in fact my next planned trip is again on Friday with lows in the mid 50s and a high of about 74 so im sure they are back in there winter patterns again went last Friday and saw plenty of reds but no takers but lately we have been experiencing pretty windy conditions with average wind speeds of about 15 to sometimes 20mph pretty tough fishing and after asking several anglers including a few guides as well come to find out im not the only one struggling to catch anything but like I have said on numerous comments in you guys posts catching fish to me is only a small part of the joy I get to experience while getting out on the water the peace I recieve to me out weighs all fish catching and besides everyone gets into a slump now and again because none of us humans are perfect and because im getting that age where my priorities have changed alot since my younger days it really doesn’t bother me and I still return home with a smile and also I know I’ll start catching I always do thanks for the info and all you do🤔😉👍
Mine just arrived in the mail. 🤗🎣🙏💯
Great news! We look forward to seeing how you like them once you’ve had a chance to get out on the water.
Thanks for the tips on retrieval. Can’t wait to put the Flea Flicker to use! – Wes
Our pleasure Wes!
When I can find some feeding trout in shallow water, I always throw the Flea Flicker, running it just below the surface, with occasional pops to the surface. I have also caught multiple +40 inch reds in the same scenario with this lure. I use the mullet color.
Thanks for sharing your results!
