Tackle Used On This Trip:

On-The-Water Action

First, I had to wait to get out onto the water due to the dense fog in the area.

Always practice safety first!!

In short, the morning was a disaster.

BUT, that quickly changed once I made a slight pivot and found some solid fish.

The dense fog and heavy winds posed a threat but I knew I had a small 2-hour window to target fish.

Not only until I got out to my spots did I realize I forgot all my extra jigheads back at the truck.

So I decided I had to go back to my truck to get more jigheads or else I would be forced to fish with just ONE hook for the whole trip.

That shortened my time out on the water even more on top of the small bite window.

Once that was all sorted and I started fishing, I didn’t have much luck for over an hour.

I decided to pivot and make a change.

For those of you that know me, I am a HUGE fan of throwing paddletails and swimbait lures.

Since those weren’t having much luck, I switched over to the MirrOlure Lil Jon twitchbait.

My goal was to try and trigger reaction strikes from fish.

Normally, I would rig this lure up on a jighead but due to the oyster bars in the area I used a weedless weighted hook.

As always I applied some Dr. Juice to add scent as well as something else to give my lure extra FLASH!

I brought out some lure dye with me and dipped the tails of the Lil Jon lures in to turn the tails a chartreuse color.

This is all in an effort to enhance my presentation and force it to stand out more.

MirrOlure Lil Jon Retrieve

After you cast out the lure and let it sink to the bottom, keep your rod tip low and parallel to the water.

That helps to prevent the wind from catching the line.

Then give the lure a series of quick twitches and jerks similar to that of a topwater retrieve.

Mix up twitches to create an erratic presentation that triggers reaction bites.

Depending on the wind speed, you may have to consistently crank the reel to prevent slack from forming.

This lure zigs-and-zags back and forth similar to a topwater lure but subsurface.

The trends I relied on just last week to catch fish in this area CHANGED and I needed to pivot to get tight lines.

Not only did I change the lure, but I made some other slight adjustments to clear the path directly to feeding fish.
