Spring is one of my favorite seasons for inshore fishing because the fish are often very active and holding in shallow water, making it one of the easiest seasons to catch trophy fish with lures.
The key to consistent success is to be able to select the right lure based on the conditions throughout each trip.
And this lesson will help you do just that.
Here’s what you’ll learn in this lesson:
- The 4 simple lures that will catch you a ton of fish
- How to easily match the lures to your conditions
- A secret for catching more fish than anyone near you
- Proven way to increase your average catch size
- One surprise lure type that seems to catch the biggest fish most often

Note: If you’re a live bait angler who is curious to start using lures, then make sure to give them a shot now because they will often out-catch live bait, assuming you use the selection strategies that are explained in this lesson.
If you don’t want the full spring bundle…

Recommended Rod, Reel, & Line
There of course, are thousands of rods, reels, and lines to select from. In general, we recommend using medium power rods with as light of line as you feel comfortable with for handling your target species.
Since these lures have various weights, we recommend using spinning tackle to make it very easy to go from one lure to the other. Medium power rods with a fast action blank that’s 7′ to 7’6″ work great with these lures. And pairing your rod of choice with a 2500 size reel and 10 lb braid is tough to beat.
Having success in catching quality fish on lures requires a good rod, reel, and line setup. The most important of the 3 by far is the rod when using lures. This is because the rod controls the most important factors, such as casting distance, retrieving the lures, feeling strikes, setting the hook, and controlling the fish during the battle.

Final Thoughts
Spring is one of the best seasons to catch both quality and high quantities of saltwater species with lures.

Great video
Thanks Charles!
Thanks for this information, how do you determine which color to use.
For the plugs, I pretty much only use mullet hd (most of the time) and slam shady (when in murky water). For the 2.0, I go with the new black-silver (for clear/calm water) and slam shady (when it’s not clear/calm). And for the prawn, I stick with the natural shrimp color.
Enjoy watching these info videos. Thank you .
Thanks Richard!
A very great video, and you are so right about it all.
Thanks for making time to post the nice comment!
Well as for me and as of lately my favorite lure in both spring and all through summer as long as the water temps are 65 and above is my trusted zman safety pin style spinnerbait rigged with either a gulp curly tail swimming mullet or 4 inch paddletail with any color containing either or or both chartruse and gold the reason being for me is all 3 senses this bait attract smell hence the highly stinky gulp baits, the flash and visible colors in murky water hence the gold blade and chartruse and or gold, and the vibration hence the paddletail and vibration the gold blade gives because once the water hits about 65 degrees the visibility starts to decrease because the algae starts to grow in the water reducing visibility at least it does here in northeast fl probably not where your from in the gulf coast part of Florida or central or south Florida where the water stays clear all year long this bait is really only for murky or dirty water NOT clear water so to sum it up basically it works for me thanks for your input and all you do😉👍
When rigging with these lures, what knot do you use?
I use the non-slip loop knot for all lures so that they have as much freedom of motion as possible: https://www.saltstrong.com/articles/non-slip-loop-knot/
Thank you, Luke, for the great tips. Can you give some tips on freshwater?
I don’t do enough freshwater fishing to offer any advice.
Great advice here Luke. KISS. I’m always consolidating. Too much is just ….. too much!
Thank you, great presentation!
Question, you mention these are you’re go to 4 in the spring and early summer.
What do you like in late summer, fall, and winter?
The summer video will be coming out in a couple weeks as the full summer weather is approaching. Two of these lures will be in it, and the other two will be replaced with what I believe are better alternatives.
