How To Select The Right Lure For Catching More Fish [Spring Edition]
- By: Luke Simonds
- on

Spring is one of my favorite seasons for inshore fishing because the fish are often very active and holding in shallow water, making it one of the easiest seasons to catch trophy fish with lures.
The key to consistent success is to be able to select the right lure based on the conditions throughout each trip.
And this lesson will help you do just that.
Here’s what you’ll learn in this lesson:
- The 4 simple lures that will catch you a ton of fish
- How to easily match the lures to your conditions
- A secret for catching more fish than anyone near you
- Proven way to increase your average catch size
- One surprise lure type that seems to catch the biggest fish most often

Note: If you’re a live bait angler who is curious to start using lures, then make sure to give them a shot now because they will often out-catch live bait, assuming you use the selection strategies that are explained in this lesson.
Gear Used in Video
- Diving Plug: Skinny Lipper
- Suspending Twitch: Flea Flicker
- Soft Plastic Baitfish: The 2.0
- Soft Plastic Shrimp: Prawn Junior
- Terminal Tackle: Weighted Helix Hooks & Round Eye Jighead 2/0 1/4 oz
Recommended Rod, Reel, & Line
There of course, are thousands of rods, reels, and lines to select from. In general, we recommend using medium power rods with as light of line as you feel comfortable with for handling your target species.
Since these lures have various weights, we recommend using spinning tackle to make it very easy to go from one lure to the other. Medium power rods with a fast action blank that’s 7′ to 7’6″ work great with these lures. And pairing your rod of choice with a 2500 size reel and 10 lb braid is tough to beat.
Having success in catching quality fish on lures requires a good rod, reel, and line setup. The most important of the 3 by far is the rod when using lures. This is because the rod controls the most important factors, such as casting distance, retrieving the lures, feeling strikes, setting the hook, and controlling the fish during the battle.

Conclusion
Spring is one of the best seasons to catch both quality and high quantities of saltwater species with lures.
If you’re interested in getting more comfortable using lures, then make sure to give these lures a try with the tips explained in this video.

Thank you, Luke, for the great tips. Can you give some tips on freshwater?
I don’t do enough freshwater fishing to offer any advice.
Great advice here Luke. KISS. I’m always consolidating. Too much is just ….. too much!
Thank you, great presentation!
Question, you mention these are you’re go to 4 in the spring and early summer.
What do you like in late summer, fall, and winter?
The summer video will be coming out in a couple weeks as the full summer weather is approaching. Two of these lures will be in it, and the other two will be replaced with what I believe are better alternatives.
Excellent video. Thanks
Has the round eye overtaken the football jighead for you?
Yes, I am now using the weedless round eyes more often because they allow me to switch back and forth between prawns and paddletails. But if I’m only using Prawn USA lures, I go with tre footballs because they help ensure it stays upright when it’s on the bottom.
Great video. Seems familiar like I’ve seen it before. This is my problem. I can’t remember all the details. This would be a great add-on to Smart Fishing app. The cheat sheet gets lost or damaged too easily. Could you add a “fill-in” for like, species, season, depth, water clarity, current then a response like, “Luke recommends…….”?
We are working these details into the Game Plan recommendations within the Smart Fishing Spots system.
Thank you guys for always evolving!!
Outstanding short video! I love the “give me the facts ma’am just the facts” in your videos. I agree with the minimalistic approach to fishing. There really aren’t any decent large tackle boxes to carry all the old junk so getting smaller is my new game. Thanks again Luke!
Thanks so much for making time to post the nice comment Scott! We’re so glad to see that you enjoyed this lesson.
Great post! I’ve also slimmed down my tackle setup and keep everything in a Gamakatsu G-Box (G3200SF) which fits nicely in my Froggy Toggs Flats Sling Pack. Highly recommend that combo for anyone that wants a minimal tackle setup.
Thanks for posting the helpful recommendation Brent!
Excellent presentation Luke. I love your common sense program for lightening up the tackle box.
Thanks for all your continued help, to make us better anglers!
Thanks for making time to post the nice comment Lou! So glad to see that you enjoyed this lesson.
