Should you use Snap Swivels with topwater lures?
Probably not.
Here’s why…

Get the Moonwalker Topwater Lure
All the time coaches are asked why they DON’T use snap swivels with topwater lures.
The first thing you’ll notice is snap swivels drag the line down.
Which causes issues with the leader getting tangled up with the front hook.
If you’re retrieving your lures and you notice they aren’t swimming properly, it’s likely because the line is fouled up.
On the other hand, when topwater lures are rigged directly to leader line like monofilament, it does not drop down in the water.
Monofilament actually floats when still and slowly sinks if submerged.
This helps keep the line away from the front hook.
You’ll also notice how low the lure sits in the water when rigged with a snap swivel.
The extra weight drags the nose of the lure down.
The angle of the lure is important because they are designed to dart back and forth.
Anything in the way of that will hurt the lure’s presentation.

You’re welcome Michael!
In the Northeast we commonly use Tactical Angler clips which are much r and lighter than the snap swivel. Quick and easy to swap out lures and haven’t noticed the issues identified in the video.
Thank you for the great feedback Michael! I’ll be testing out some smaller clips as well.
Thanks for the explanation with visuals. I have been using Norman swivel clips because it’s easier to switch top waters but will start tying loop knots.
You’re welcome Kimberly!
Tony, what’s your thought on using the VMC Crankbait Snaps instead of a regular snap swivel?
The small snaps are a better option. Less is more!
Any videos on how to tie the loop for the lure?
Here’s a tutorial:

i recently purchased the Moonwalker and mine came with a split ring on the nose. The ones – like this video – I have seen shared here do not. I have kept it on and tied a clinch knot to it versus removing and using a loop knot – but curious about the differences…
Hey Kurtis! We advise to remove the split ring and use a loop knot. Even a split ring can pull your line down to hang in front of the hook.
Good sound advice!!
Thanks Eduardo!
Thanks Tony. Good information. Things you think about but don’t take the time to really understand.
You’re welcome Charlie!
I use the VMC crankbait swivel size 0 rated at 50lb. The big snap swivels are way too big but these are a nice option and I tie a loop knot to them actually.
Smaller snaps are great alternative!
Very true and great post on loop
Knot over the snap swivels and you were 100% true and cotton all aspects, as well the snap swivel will also over time brood the weight and casting the lure, the line will break and you’ll you’ll end up losing fish and lures …. !!
Thank you for the great feedback Thomas!
