Deep Sea Fishing Mistakes…(Are You Making These?)

http://deep%20sea%20fishing%20for%20grouper

It’s deep sea fishing time!

After back to back 12-hour days of offshore fishing with Capt. Dylan Hubbard and his crew, I have a newfound respect for guys who do this every day for a living.

It’s hard work!

Between the two-hour boat ride out and back, bruises from the rod butt jamming in my armpit, and sore muscles from reeling big fish up 200 feet, I was beat.

The first day most of the Salt Strong team went out for some team bonding, and the second day Luke and I went out to film Red Snapper Mastery with Capt. Hubbard.

What was amazing was that on the second day, we were able to learn from the mistakes we made on the first day and catch more (and bigger!) fish.

On this podcast episode, Luke and I discuss deep sea fishing mistakes.

You’ll learn:

  1. The biggest mistake beginners make when fighting the fish (this leads to many lost fish and broken hearts)
  2. The difference between using mono vs braid
  3. The proper way to hold your rod for maximum power while using less energy (trust me, the wrong way is exhausting)
  4. What not to do when rigging your bait (live or frozen)
  5. What newbies wear and bring (only bring these if you want everyone to know it’s your first time offshore fishing!)

You can watch the video version of the podcast below, listen to it by clicking the play button below that, or on iTunes or Stitcher.

Note: there are several demonstrations and pictures, so watching the video version is recommended.

Enjoy!

Capt. Anthony put in some hard work to get that amberjack into the boat!

And on any other day, that grouper would have been the prize fish, but it was just overshadowed by the big AJ.

What’s the biggest fish you’ve caught?

I’ve heard Captain Dylan Hubbard say to hold tension on the conventional reel spool with the thumb while letting out fishing line. But, he didn’t say why. Is it to keep the bait from spinning around the main line, to keep from an over run of fishing line, or to keep the sinker from hitting bottom hard? These’re reasons why I hold tension on the spool. Are there anymore reasons why, it’s good to hold tension the spool with the thumb when letting out fishing line?

All of those reasons, plus the ability to feel a strike while the bait is dropping (which happens more frequently than most people think).

Luke hit the nail on the head, its to ensure you don’t get backlashes, to ensure your lead isn’t separating from your swivel too much and causing tangles, but when targeting red snapper you really put alot of pressure on the spool and slow your descent to the bottom. This allows the big aggressive red snapper up in the water column a chance to smack your bait before getting to bottom. Many snapper species often school up and the biggest fish are at the top and bottom of the school in the water column. If you drop more slowly it gives you a shot at a little of all of them, instead of rocketing your bait to bottom and missing an opportunity to present that bait to a greater number of fish. Check out the spot when your getting set up if there’s fish stacked from the bottom up in the column this is a great method, if you don’t see that huge christmas tree looking show off the bottom then it’s probably not so important

He was using a brand new combo he picked up for the trip, it was a nice combo for sure!
