4 Tips To Find The Best Fishing Spots (Online And On The Water Tactics)

In this video I’m going to show you exactly how to find the best fishing spots both from home on your computer and while you’re out on the water.
There are tens (or even hundreds) of square miles in most bays and rivers that you’re fishing in, so the big question is this: how do you narrow all of this area down to four or five spots to fish for the day?
And then when you get to those spots, how do you know if there are even fish around?
That’s exactly what I’m going to show you in this video.

Flats are some of the best spots because of seagrass.
Baitfish, shrimp, and crabs live around the roots and blades of the seagrass, and predator fish feed on these baitfish and crustaceans.
Plus the grass provides both hiding and ambush spots.
2 Things I Look For When Fishing A Flat
1. Sporadic grass & potholes
These areas are best because they provide ambush points for predator fish.
Dense, thick grass is tough to fish because fish may be buried in the grass and not willing to come out (or not see your lure).
2. Drop-offs
Drop-offs are great, especially in the winter where the deeper water will be warmer at night and in the morning, while the shallower water will be warmer in the afternoon after the sun has gotten to heat it up.
What To Look For When On The Water
When you do get to a drop-off, a shoreline, or an area with lots of potholes, here’s what you want to look for;
- Birds
- Baitfish in tightly packed schools and getting spooked out of the water
These two things let you know that baitfish are around, and most likely so are predator fish eating the baitfish.

Conclusion
One of the best types of spots to fish are grass flats.
They’re home to lots of baitfish and crustaceans plus they’re great ambush and hiding spots for predator fish.
Two things I look for in a flat are potholes and dropoffs, and when I’m on the water I’m constantly looking for signs of bait.

Thanks Thomas! They can be productive year round. I would target flats that have deeper edges close to the flat. Target those deeper edges earlier in the day, and then move up into the shallows later in the day after the sun has been hitting it for a while. The sun hitting the grass and soft bottom can help warm the flat up quite a bit.
