Want to catch black drum out of a school?
If you find a school of black drum, it can be tricky to get their attention.
But if you have the right lure and cast in the right spot, you can easily catch these fun fighters.

You don’t need live bait to catch really nice black drum!
But black drum do rely very heavily on scent when feeding.
So you need a lure that is scented in order for them to show interest in your bait.
Normally the fish on the edge of the school are the ones that eat an artificial lure.
Cast out and let your lure sit there for a minute and then slowly drag the bottom.
When your lure is sitting in or around a school, they will bump the line and move the lure around.
And that will get the attention of other fish!

Never had much luck with artificials. Do you recommend using liquid scent??

I think Black Drum are some of the most underrated fish on the flats. Tons of fun on a lighter rod, but not too light though.

Nice fish. In all my years of flats fishing the west coast of central FL I have never run across black drum. Are these the same fish that I caught under the Howard Frankland bridge years ago that were 25 – 30 lbs? Where would I find them on the flats?
Thanks David! I have not come across them on the west coast personally, but Luke has found some nice schools in the St. Pete area. Depending on the time of year these fish will push up onto the flats close to the bridges that they frequently hang around.
I think their is too muvh fresh water in the Manatee River for also with the water being to warm. What do you guys think about that.

I was fishing in the Manatee River yesterday and I usually catch some but, I didn’t even get a bit for 2 hours.

Well, yeah. Would be nice to have hundreds of fish schooling around in plain sight. Like fishing in a barrel. The hard part is finding a school like that!
I have had trips fishing these schools for hours without a single bite. Not as easy as it looks! If they were redfish then it would be much easier. Black drum are very shy to artificial lures. Also having blue crab, fiddler crabs, or really old smelly shrimp would be the most ideal for catching them. Its a fun challenge on artificial though!
