In this type of tournament, all the anglers leave from the SAME launch location and they all use the SAME lure.

This tournament featured our very own F.R.E.D. Paddletail!

On-The-Water Analysis

Prevailing winds and a negative low tide immediately got this trip off to an interesting start.

To make matters worse, I was restricted to ONE lure due to the rules of the tournament.

So the conditions were tough but I was no doubt up to the task.

You can rig the one lure any way you want in a tournament like this.

I anticipated some stunned, lethargic fish due to intense drops in temperatures so I brought more than a few different kinds of jigheads so I could maximize my efforts in the strike zone and find what works.

Also, on the morning we launched, we heard duck hunters off in the distance.

So I had to avoid running into the hunters while also trying to find some fish.

I found a small creek that was totally clear of hunters and looked to be FISHY.

My feeling was I’d have a better shot at sparking a bite from these cold fish with the popping cork.

The popping cork and F.R.E.D. paddletail combo has been an excellent rig for me as of late.

After no luck, I pushed further into smaller creeks.

With the tide falling, I wanted to see if I could get a chance at targeting these fish in super skinny water.

I ended up getting out of my kayak to walk it over the shallows and to slightly deeper water.

A bunch of redfish spooked out in front of me but because I couldn’t control my drift in the current, I missed out.

After hunting down a bite, I finally got one way back into the creek system.

F.R.E.D. the NED got the job done!

So I felt positive and kept on grinding.

But after 2 and a half hours of nothing, I made my way out of the creek.

Conclusion

F.R.E.D. the NED make it work on this trip!

When those temperatures drop in the middle of winter, I always lean toward using the Ned Rig.

The slow fall entices those fish and triggers strikes in the colder months.

I did in fact come in FIRST place in the redfish category, but another angler took home the trout victory.

LOL to be fair, yall’s release of the Slot Machine has been pretty bad and it’s turned me off of wanting it. This was supposed to be a gift to myself for my bday last Aug…I have a feeling that if you look back, this was advertised as a June 2022 release and I still may not have one in my hands (if I wanted one still) in June 2023. Sorry I can’t solve for not being a Founders member.

Appreciate that. Super fair of me to say however I’m surely not alone in being the only person that was highly anticipating this last year, got tired of the “see you in one or 2 months” continuing, and have since found alternatives. Also, if any issues with my rod it doesn’t give me assurance that any type of warranty claim would be handled in a timely fashion either. Thanks Matt, tight lines!

Congrats Matt on the Redfish win! The wind did look pretty rough and adding a 30° drop in temperature in the mix – it must have been brutal on the way back to the launch. I keep forgetting to use a popping cork with artificial. I can’t wait to try it on my next trip. As always, thank you for your insight.
