On-The-Water Analysis

With the recent weather we’ve been experiencing, our goal was to throw the Power Prawn USA Junior in deeper pockets of water.

To start the day, we would be fishing a super low tide that eventually turns into an incoming tide.

Low water levels prevent fish from pushing far underneath the mangroves and trees.

With that being said, I was late to the ramp so we actually fished more of the incoming tide than low.

It is in these situations that you have to make use of the 90/10 Recipe to find and catch hungry fish.

Your original pre-trip plan might not work but the 90/10 Recipe will.

It didn’t take long before we started hooking into some speckled trout and ladyfish.

Joe caught the smallest sheepshead I’ve ever seen!!

We wanted to find more fish so we pushed further into some backcountry areas with deeper pockets – which ended up being the RIGHT move.

After making a few casts, we hooked into both ladyfish and trout but I made a slight adjustment to my retrieve that seemed to weed the ladyfish out and trigger strikes from ONLY trout.

I slowly crawled the Power Prawn USA Junior along the bottom to stay below the ladyfish.

All I did was tilt my fishing rod up to the sky and reel slowly without moving the rod at all.

I kept this up trying to hook into a ladyfish and it was only effective for targeting trout.

Joe caught a snook and after lots of ladyfish and trout, we wanted a redfish.

So we spotted a bird sitting on a shoreline with shallow water that would start to heat up with the rising sun.

I threw a cast right underneath a mangrove and it was fish on!

We got our redfish!!

Core Lessons From This Trip

  • The 90/10 Recipe

The 90/10 Recipe is a proven formula we’ve developed designed to help you FIND and catch MORE fish.

It states that 90% of the feeding fish are in 10% of the water.

This just helps you put yourself in the RIGHT spot at the RIGHT time.

We were able to hook into a solid inshore slam in less than 2 hours.

  • Speckled Trout Retrieve

Traditionally, I prefer to bounce shrimp jigs along the bottom in deeper pockets of water for speckled trout.

However, that jigging behavior seems to attract the attention of pesky ladyfish nearby.

Simply dragging the Power Prawn USA Junior along the bottom seemed to trigger the most trout strikes.

Once I made the switch to this retrieve, I caught ZERO ladyfish and only trout.

Tackle & Gear

For those of us fishing with artificial lures, the rod is the most important tool.

It is how you feel strikes, set the hook, and reel those fish in.

I always recommend spending most of your tackle budget on a fishing rod.

Lately, I’ve been fishing with our Custom Slot Machine Rod.

The rod is a 7’6″ Medium-Power Fast-Action Tip.

It is an ideal blend of casting light lures, feeling the smallest of taps, and having the strong backbone to muscle big fish in.

Moreover, lure selection is critical to make sure you are covering all the right depths.

During the winter, we’re mostly fishing down near the bottom.

The deep bottom with a nearby structure is the perfect winter habitat for inshore fish.

In many cases, the fish at the bottom will not exert the energy to chase down bait higher in the water column.

I recommend fishing with the Power Prawn USA rigged on a Hoss Weedless Football Jighead.

Now you can get right next to the structure down near the bottom without worrying about snags.

For that redfish I caught, we were fishing the shallow mangroves, so I had the Mulligan rigged on a Hoss Helix Hook.

I had one rod spooled with 10lb Daiwa J-Braid x8 Grand matched with a 30lb Ande Monofilament Leader.

In case we got into some bigger fish, I had a prototype rod spooled with 20lb braid.

We’re working on another custom rod that tailors to targeting bigger, heavier fish.

Conclusion

The 90/10 Recipe flat-out produces fish.

Even after missing our timing and fishing the portion of the tide we didn’t anticipate, we still found fish stacked up and were able to reel in a solid slam.

If you’re ever in doubt, lean back on the 90/10 Recipe to help you find those hungry fish!

It’s a slight thump and then some weight afterwards.
