Just to clarify, the posts that the basic members will view do not have the tactics section or the map, correct?
That is correct. Basic members can NOT see the map, can’t see details/tactics on any post, can’t see on the. water Insider reports, can’t see spot dissections, can’t chat with other members, etc
I’m one of those who have gone through almost all the Courses, look at almost all the Fishing Tips and read almost all the comments/feedback … but rarely post or reply. I’m an avid angler — just not very good at it, so have little to contribute. Getting better (thanks, in part, to Salt Strong ): but still learning … at age 72.
I am in my second year of paid membership and totally plan to continue. I believe that I am getting good value for my membership dollar. I buy a lot of gear from the shop. I re-read the related Tips before I go fishing. I just am not very active on posts.
So, my advice to those members who are counting posts or other sorts of “hits” to see how active the community is: don’t worry about it. I’m sure there are many members like myself who are very appreciative – and supportive – of Salt Strong. We just don’t comment too much.
Good stuff, Paul. Thank you for this comment. We appreciate you.
My guess is that the quality of the posts will decline when you do not have any skin in the game. Also I am not sure I am comfortable with nonmembers having access to any personal information Through the Members Directory.
Hey Gregory. They won’t have access to your information and it’s definitely NOT open to the public. This “basic” membership still requires signing up and is really no different than a temporary trial. Nothing should change in terms of language, respect, etc and if it does – even slightly – then we kick them out and stop it. This decision was made from Insider feedback saying it would be great to have a way to refer friends to see how helpful the community who were on the fence. But if enough members are against it, we’ll shut it off. Hope that makes sense.
Not sure how I feel about this….I don’t use that platform but seems as though you are opening up the “family” to the public. What about all that one in a million talk!? In the past you listed several good reasons for keeping it insiders only (language, respect between anglers, etc). I haven’t listened to the podcast yet but this is my initial thought after reading the title. You guys have developed a TREMENDOUS thing here…something I’m proud to be a part of…dont ruin it by trying to do too much. I hope it isn’t about money….
Hey Jason. Thank you so much for your feedback here. It’s definitely NOT open to the public. Thanks for the reply Joe. I probably should have researched and listened to the podcast before I responded…it was a “knee jerk” response. I really appreciate what you guys do
I completely understand, Jason. This Insider community means a lot to so many of us and the last thing we want to do is defile it or bring on bad people. I also hope you know we would never let that happen as this is our baby. This entire “basic” membership was from requests from Insiders and “uniting friends and family through fishing” aligned with our Mission so we said yes. But the second we even get a whiff of bad people coming in or that a majority of members don’t want this, we’ll can it faster than a pufferfish bites off a paddletail. Appreciate you buddy.
I’m concerned about the quality of the Community content if you don’t have to pay to get in.
Hey Brian. Thank you for taking the time to comment. Do you mind elaborating?
Recently, the number of online viewers passed 100 one evening. The number actually posting something (even a 3 or 4 word greeting) is considerably less than those just viewing, and with many being SS employees. I’ve never understood why roughly 1/3 of 1% of the 27,000 Insiders participate, and seemingly nothing I’ve seen that targets these folks to encourage them to use the Insider Community. Is it that the Insider Community doesn’t appeal to nearly all of the Insider Club members? I didn’t even know it existed for awhile. I’ve gone back to read posts 4 or more years ago, and to me, there were many more substantive and informative posts back then, and the vast number of those posters have disappeared from participating today. In trying to keep it simple, I realize that the small number showing on Chat as viewing at any given time may change but looking over the names evidences a very, very low participation rate.
There are some posters who share substantial information, and often link SS videos to save time. That ‘s juxtaposed against those who prefer a few words or just adding a quick greeting but doing so on almost every post. I’m not sure if those with a “Basic” membership will be able to open “Fishing tips” content if a link is posted in the Community. Hopefully, those Insiders who give a lot of good information and offer alternative ideas will not feel the Community has basically turned into repeated posts asking the same basic tackle questions over and over again, day in, day out. You might want to consider doing some special introduction videos tailored to this group which could answer many of their basic questions. Time will tell how well this works out.
If your aim is to draw in more “Basic” members in hoping of converting them into club sales, then it probably doesn’t matter if other Community participants drop away. Like most in business, growth becomes the top priority rather than oriented around quality measures. Whether it’s enlarging sales, revenues, profits, membership, etc., it can become an obsession since it’s something that is measurable and gives a feeling of success in a more is better society.
Hey Rob! Great to hear from you, as always. I cherish your feedback and the fact you always read and listen to everything.
It sounds like you might be basing your numbers on the live chat. The live chat has nothing to do with how many people are on the platform (so please don’t judge anything on that).
What you don’t see behind the scenes is that we are celebrating RECORD-BREAKING amounts of Insiders using the community, new records in engagement, new records in total comments, new records in new members making their first post, and new records of members logging in every single day. In a sentence, the community is the best it’s ever been by a huge margin. Four years ago it was barely alive and we even shut it down completely for a bit because no one was using it (which is perhaps why some of those original posters aren’t active).
Your hypothesis about the Basic access is both right and wrong. You had mentioned that there hasn’t been much put out to bring attention to the community… but isn’t what this entire podcast was about? We’ve already done two podcasts this year on nothing but hammering home the benefits of the community and we’ve sent out numerous emails as well. We actually thought me might have been talking about it too much. Moreover, the entire purpose of this Basic membership is to bring attention to the power of the community to our existing members while recruiting some new members to join. The same thing any good organization, church, or club would do on a regular basis.
Rob, as I said earlier, we’re very grateful for members like you who tune into everything and truly care about this club. Hit me up directly anytime with ideas or thoughts on how we can make it better. I’d love to hear from you. Here’s my private email: joe@saltstrong.com
