Black Drum Can’t Resist This Lure & Scent Combo

It’s such a tease when you find a massive school of fish and they don’t eat anything you throw at them…
This was the scenario I found myself in for almost an entire week when I stumbled upon these black drum.
But when I tried throwing something new at them, I hooked up right away!
Watch the video below to see what lure and scent I was using to land the massive black drum pictured above.

And here’s a list of the equipment that I was using for this catch:
- Scent:Dr. Juice Slam Scent
- Lure: Power Prawn
- Hook: Power Prawn Weedless Jig Head
- These lures can be rigged on TwistLocks too… click here for lesson
- Rod: TFO Professional 7’6″ Medium Power
- Reel: Daiwa Legalis 2500-XH
- Line: PowerPro 10 lb Braid
- Leader: Ande 20 lb Mono Leader
When I first found this school of black drum, they wouldn’t eat anything I threw at them.
But when I tried the Power Prawn with Dr. Juice, I got a bite right away!
All I did was spray on the Dr. Juice, toss the Power Prawn rigged on a weedless jig head into the middle of the school, slowly drag it back to the boat, then it was on like Donkey Kong!
I didn’t need to work the lure a special way, all I did was put scent on it and get it in front of their face.

Luke, I slowed the video down to see what size hook and weight you were using. This hook looks like it has a bullet-shaped weight. Is that correct? I don’t see a twist-lock that SaltStrong sells with a bullet-shaped weight.
The weighted hook I was using is one of the custom hooks we made for the Power Prawns. They are out of stock because our jig manufacturer is unable to get more hooks in and we don’t even have an ETA. The good news is that the TwistLock hooks can work too as long as the top part of the power prawn is trimmed off as shown in this video: https://saltstrongdev.wpengine.com/articles/rig-power-prawn-owner-twistlock-hook/
Thanks for that info!
WOW Nice Fish!! Luke, your like a stick of dynamite! Always bringing ’em in!

What a cow! Where you able to take several from the same school?
That was the only one I caught… the school pushed off into deeper water while I was fighting this one.
Big ol black drum!
Awesome FISH! Got a quick scheduled work trip near Beaufort SC hopefully can find the water! Seeing fish like that gets my heart going!
Thanks for making time to leave the comment William! I hope you can get back out on the water soon.
Are Black drum good to eat? Do they taste as good as red drum?
They are very good eating, especially in the 10-15 lb range. Nice white meat. When they get much larger they tend to get a little wormy. They still taste good, but you have to cut the worms out and get past the idea that they were there. 🙂
Also, bleed them ASAP after catching them by cutting the throat until you reach the main vein. This keeps the meat white and tasty. Black drum have a reputation as a trash fish, but it is one of the best tasting fish you will ever eat.
Monster black drum – nice catch Luke
Thanks Pablo!
That’s exciting! Good stuff, Luke
Thanks Greg! I hope the trip with your son last weekend was a blast!
Super nice drum, man what a hog!
Thanks David!
Nice fish, Luke!
The Power Prawn is awesome. I have not been able to get my hands on Dr. Juice, yet. Pro-Cure Super Gel Shrimp works on them great, though. It lasts a long time. I can see the red color the next day after fishing it all day with one application the day before. My wife caught a 17.5 flounder (post coming) on a Power Prawn and she has even had a Power Prawn bit in half. A first for us.
Great work! The culprit of the bit in half incident was most likely a pufferfish… they can bite through anything.
