Fishing Creeks And Canals After A Severe Cold Front

Conditions were tough as we got off to a super tough start fishing creeks and canals after a severe cold front!

A severe freeze swept across the southeast which made me suspect the SKUNK would be present.

But, this trip ended up being an absolute blast with some epic fish-catching action.

Find out how we made it happen in the video below!!

On-The-Water Analysis

The pressure was ON.

Insider Members got together for a meetup before we all hit the water in search of some fish!

I always jump at the chance to get out and fish with our Insider Members whenever I get the opportunity.

So I felt the pressure to catch a bunch of fish, and not only that, our Digital Marketing Specialist Barry Nicholson joined me for the trip.

The initial game plan was to get out there and target the deeper pockets of water with small shrimp jigs.

The fish are usually holding in the deeper areas waiting for a meal to come to them.

After the first spot was a complete bust, I started to feel nervous and that feeling of a skunked trip.

But we made a move and finally got into some action at spot #2.

Most of the action was ladyfish.

So we pushed further back into the canals and creeks in search of deep water.

Later on, we found an area with a few points and mangroves that looked like they held some snook.

I skipped my lure underneath the mangroves and the snook were hitting right on the shade line.

We pushed EVEN FURTHER into some real skinny water because the snook kept biting!

On our way, we also saw juvenile tarpon rolling on the surface trying to get away from the boat.

Eventually, the boat was grounded on a mud bank but that was when we found some deep water and the tarpon stopped moving forward.

We were grounded but up ahead there was a channel of deeper water around a point that the tarpon were using to hop back and forth.

I kept missing the hook sets on both tarpon and snook.

That is until I hooked into a much nicer juvenile tarpon and made sure to stick the hook!

Then the tarpon caught onto what we were doing so we tried to get the boat off the mud bank.

Now with better positioning, we threw our lures right on top of the fish.

Key Lessons Learned

  • There Will Be Feeding Fish After Severe Cold Fronts

Even in spite of 15-degree or more temperature drops, there are still going to be feeding fish ready to eat.

If you stick to the 90/10 Fishing Recipe, it can lead to some insanely fun fish-catching action.

It’s always worth a shot if you can get out on the water.

  • Juvenile Tarpon + Small Shrimp Lures

After using it on a few trips, I can safely say the Power Prawn U.S.A. Junior Nub Rig is one of the best for targeting juvenile tarpon.

I tear off the tail section to leave a small portion of plastic.

A straight retrieve has been able to trigger the most strikes.

If you’re fishing near lots of small tarpon, go ahead and throw a small lure and straight retrieve it back to you.

Conclusion

The bad news is I couldn’t keep the fish stuck to my hook.

The good news is I dialed in on the right retrieve and lure presentation to trigger strikes.

You don’t have to have a bunch of fancy equipment either.

Small lures that have a nice glide in the water will definitely crush juvenile tarpon if they’re around.

Fun report, Luke! I totally understand the feeling of getting lots of bites and yet missed hooksets haunting me lol. Aside from seeing them well in daylight, how do you tell the difference between the juvenile tarpon and others that jump and go crazy like the ladyfish and sometimes snook?

Thanks Xavier! The tarpon seem to jump with more power and gusto than snook and ladyfish. But all can be a lot of fun when hooked in small creeks like this.
