How To Catch An Inshore Slam Under The Worst Conditions

This report shows a great example of how to catch an inshore slam under the worst conditions.
I had the pleasure of fishing with the 2022 Salt Strong Angler of the Year – George Layton.
The water was flat calm and there was not a cloud in the sky, but I managed to pull out an inshore slam.
Here’s how!!

I was honored to join George and spend the morning fishing on his boat.
We started out with a small trout to get the skunk off the boat but pushed on for bigger fish.
As we moved along the mangroves I tossed out the Moonwalker and a BIG snook came up and missed the lure.
We pushed further on and came across a point and I tossed the Moonwalker right around the hanging trees.
A redfish hit the surface and swallowed down the plug!
The water was super calm but there was enough of a current to spark a bite around that point.
This was one of the only spots that had any water movement at all.
As we kept moving we had to rely on the periodic breeze that buzzed over the water.
George and I switched positions on the boat at this point and I hooked into a snook to seal the slam.
Tidal flow throughout the trip was next to nothing and we really relied heavily on the slight breeze every now and then.
But we did manage to reel in a slam all on the same lure.
I stuck with the Moonwalker Topwater lure throughout the trip.
When the bite gets tough on flat and calm days with bluebird skies, a fantastic way to trigger strikes is with a topwater lure.
The topwater lure often triggers reaction strikes if fish are agitated and willing to eat.
They may not be hungry but their predatory instinct will kick in.

I don’t think those conditions would be the worst to me the worst would be 20 plus northeast winds after a cold front with extremely choppy muddy cold water and lately with the exception of cold water and a cold front that’s the conditions here in jacksonville fl that I have been facing commonly these last few weeks very tough fishing but I’m also not fishing just about everyday like you saltstrong coaches do I go when I can go and unfortunatly lately when the water has been calm enough to fish with topwaters I haven’t been really doing very well every now and then a small trout or rat red but nothing legal with is strange because in not so long ago past years I would slay both the reds and trout on topwaters night and day I just hope my slump is not going to be a new norm for me anyways thanks for the info and all you do
I say worst might be a stretch, yes, but the complete lack of tide movement or wind, and the really hot sun shining bright with no cloud cover, made it really tough to find any fish in a feeding pattern, so we had to grind it out with something different. that is why I chose the Moonwalker. Thanks for watching Steven!
I don’t know George Layton, but he’s very active in the community, always offering encouragement. Seems like a real gentleman. Even when you hang one in the mangroves 🤣 Hopefully I’ll get to meet him one day.
George really is one of a kind! Thanks for watching Steven!
