FEATURED GEAR:
I’m talking about the NED RIG.
The lures typically used in Ned Rigs are 2.5-3 inch long soft plastics without a tail rigged on a Z-Man Pro ShroomZ Jighead or similar mushroom-style jigheads.
When winter rolls in and water temperatures drop, predatory fish do not want to chase down your lures.
You need a presentation that will easily stay right in front of their faces.
Because of the jighead design, this rig will stand straight up tall at rest.
You can even dead-stick the rig and let it sit on the bottom or work it as slowly as possible.
It’s TOUGH for a predatory inshore fish to resist striking this rig.
At rest, the lure will wiggle and move in the current which appears very natural in the wintertime.
The Slam Shady Z-Man TRD is an excellent lure for this rig or any of our Prawn USA lures are a great choice as well.
How To Rig Up For Success
The great thing about the Ned Rig is its effectiveness and simplicity.
It’s easy to use and easy to rig for all levels.
You’ll want to use a flat-head style jighead like the Pro ShroomZ from Z-Man.
Pair that with the Z-Man TRD Slam Shady and you’re in business.
It is a basic 2.75-inch stick bait.
Because it is from Z-Man, it is made using TPE material so it is durable and strong.
Best of all, it is buoyant.
Take the hook point of the jighead and slide it into the center of the soft plastic lure.
Push the lure up onto the hook until it reaches the bend in the hook shank.
Tilt the hook point up and out of the back of the lure.
Then, push it up to the head of the jighead making sure everything remains straight.
As I mentioned before, this rig also works extremely well with the Prawn USA Junior shrimp lure.
Wintertime Ned Rig Retrieve
First, cast the rig out and give it time to sink down to the bottom.
When it hits the bottom, slowly hop the lure along the bottom with a slight tilt of the rod.
Reel in that slack in the line and let the lure sit down on the bottom.
Repeat the same slight lift to create those short hops along the bottom.
The length of pauses and amount of hops depends on the mood of the fish.
Dial into what they want and repeat that for more strikes.
Keep in mind, the stronger the cold front, the more lethargic the fish which means the slower you’ll want to work your lures.

Using ELAZtech (floats whereas other plastics sink and fall flat.) and adding scent, I found, is very important, like the small profile and slow presentation.
