2 Simple Tricks to Catch More Fish With Soft Plastic Jerks
- By: Luke Simonds
- on
I want to show you a couple of rigging details that completely changed how this jerk lure performs for me in winter.
It looks simple, but when it’s rigged correctly, fish react to it even when they’re not actively feeding.
These are the two things I pay attention to every time I tie one on.
Stick around until the end for a bonus tip on what I do when fish are extra spooky.
See how I rig this, plus what I do when fish get spooky, below!
Featured Gear:
- Lure: Tweaker
- Rigging 1: 2/0 Hoss Round Eye Jighead 1/8oz
- Rigging 2: 3/0 Weedless Hoss Helix 1/8oz
- Rigging 3: 3/0 Weedless Hoss Helix Weightless
Key Takeaways
- This jerk lure is built to work in winter, but only when it’s rigged with intention.
- One small detail up front changes how the lure moves in the water.
- Something matters more than most anglers realize, especially in cold conditions.
- A simple rigging habit can help the lure last longer and behave more naturally.
- When fish get extra spooky, there’s one adjustment that’s been especially reliable for me.
Final Thoughts
This is one of those lures where small details make a big difference, especially in winter. I’ve had some of my best recent fish come on this exact setup simply by paying attention to how it’s rigged.

Excellent info Luke, proper rigging is KEY with the Tweaker !! As I can’t fish the salt right now, I have been slaying 2- 6 lb Bass in my back yard by fishing a weightless Tweaker right on the edge of weedbeds where they are seeking heat & staying out of the sunlight. The bite is extremely light as they just pick it up & hold it in their mouths, as they turn to go back into hiding, set the hook !! Hope to be back on the salt in a month or so.
Great info! Thanks!!
Will give it a try!!
While I know they work and have a wide assortment in colors of your tweeker plastic stickbaits because I bought them when you first advertised them i never really have used them much probably because of the higher confidence I have in shrimp lures in the really cold conditions of the winter season here in northeast fl but I just might have to try them more because like I said at the beginning I do know they work and don’t doubt your word but we all have habits some good some bad and thats one of mine to try something new once and a while thanks for the valuable intel as usual Luke and all you do😉👍
Great tips Luke. Can’t wait to get out there and try it.
Luke, rigged up a side-by-side rig with the Slam Shady and Gold Digger Tweakers. 1st cast a 25″ Seatrout nailed the Slam Shady. This ties my PB for Seatrout. Later in the day I caught a 18″ Redfish on the Gold Digger. The side-by-side rig was made using 30lb mono and 3/0 weightless twist lock hooks, I was fishing in less than 2′ of water. Great little rig!
How awesome that you caught a 25-inch trout with the sidekick rig!
I only own Turd tweakers. Can’t imagine any better color for that profile. Prove me wrong, lol
Thank you for this information. I have one question, have you tried using rattlers in these soft plastics.
I have not tried rattles in these particular lures. But that’ll surely work well especially when fishing murky water zones.
Luke, you usually nail it with great straightforward tips, and this one is no exception. Escaping Massachusetts for USVI next week, but probably won’t fish. Spring time in New England is when all this cabin fever explodes 😀
Thanks Clyde!
Thanks for the great info. Always great videos.
Our pleasure!
The tweaker is a super darter.cant wait to use it weightless, and the colors are great .it has produced for me in purple black, with a hoss helix hook.thank you luke
Glad to see that you are enjoying this lure too.
