This trip started off slow and we ended up working hard for a bite while fishing with Texas Insiders!
It’s always a treat to have the chance to fish with Insider Members as I make my periodic stops across the southeast.
The five of us hit the water with high hopes of finding a HOT bite.
Things started off slow but a few things went our way and we found some hungry fish!!

We absolutely found ourselves in the 90/10 Zone after covering LOTS of water.
I had actually been in the same spot just a few weeks before and found feeding fish there as well.
I think I even hooked into my first Texas slam!
And it wasn’t just me catching fish, all of us were hooked up into solid fish.
One of the Insiders with us caught a redfish with 7 spots on BOTH sides for a total of 14!!
Main Takeaways & Lessons
The area we caught fish stretched to about the size of a football field as we were fishing very close to each other.
Without a shred of a doubt, we were smack in the middle of the 90/10 Zone for this area.
All in all, we caught about two dozen redfish altogether and really enjoyed a fantastic day out on the water.
But things did not start out easy.
The takeaway from this trip is when you don’t see any signs of life, it’s time to make a move.
The move on this trip just so happened to be a mile-and-a-half journey across an open bay.
As soon as we got to the other side of the bay, we found oyster beds loaded with fish.
90% of the feeding fish were located in this one small spot.
Most of the feeding fish are going to be in a concentrated area wherever it is you are fishing.
Tackle & Gear
The Slam Shady Mulligan caught all of the fish for me on this trip.
I had it rigged on a Hoss Helix Hook to maintain weedless properties in shallow water.
Typically I will rig these lures up on an open-faced jighead with an exposed hook.
You generally have a better hookup ratio this way.
But due to the oyster bars in the area, it was best to use a weedless hook to avoid any snags.
As far as the rod I was using, I had the Cashion Element 7-Foot Medium-Heavy Fishing Rod with me.
I personally really like this rod.
Aside from its on-the-water performance, it is the least expensive American-made fishing rod on the market right now.
American-made means not parts that were assembled overseas and then put together in America.
The rod blank and additional parts are all manufactured right here in the United States.
I had that matched up with the Daiwa Fuego 3000 Spinning Reel.
The Fuego is the cheapest reel Daiwa makes that includes their MagSeal Technology.
That really helps prevent water contamination while you’re out there fishing.
This entire setup is one of the best bang-for-your-buck options in the inshore saltwater fishing space.

WHOA!
I was in Iceland for 9 days and missed my Saltstrong fix!
Came back, only to find my mug on the screen! That caused a double take for sure! 🙂
A fondly remembered day for sure!
can you comment on why you are using the cashion med heavy versus the medium cashion rod
Sure can.
The Cashion MH is closer to most Mediums but these have a higher range of application. Most Medium power rods rods have a lure rating of 1/4 to 3/4 oz. The Cashion I was using has a range of 3/16 – 1 oz so it has more practical use than most Medium power rods. That model is known as an All Purpose rod. I really like it.
thanks Pat..great information
