Across the board, most hard body twitchbaits are going to need the same retrieve to work the lure properly.

There are some plugs that are lipped and there are different types of retrieves that apply to those lures.

Twitch & Pause

The standard retrieve with the MR17 MirrOdine lures is the twitch and pause method.

These hard body lures are either floating, sinking, or suspending.

After you cast the lure out, you want to make sure it has a few seconds to fall into the desired water column.

If you are fishing in a shallow area, you can start your retrieve immediately so the lure does not drag across the bottom.

The technique for the twitch and pause method is extremely alike to working a soft plastic jerk bait.

Give the rod a few twitches in a row and then pause to let the lure drop down and settle in the water column.

Make sure you reel in the slack of the line after you pause.

For suspending twitchbaits, the pause after a few twitches allows the lure to sit in the strike zone longer as it sits and slowly falls in the water.

Erratic Retrieve

Similar to the jerk shad retrieve, you want to cast the lure out and then continuously twitch your rod while reeling simultaneously.

As far as reeling, you are focused on reeling in the slack as you retrieve the lure.

With this method, you are using the rod tip to perform all the action on the lure.

Drift Or Dead Stick Technique

For this type of retrieve, you are going to want to use a suspending twitchbait in an area with current.

In terms of positioning, you want to be upcurrent of the area you are targeting.

Positioning is important for this retrieve because you are casting the lure out, opening up the bail, and letting the lure drift with the current.

Once you know the lure has reached where you want it to go, give it a couple of pops with the rod and then let it drift back down.

This is an extremely effective technique on a slow day where there is current flowing in and out of choke points.

I’ve fished a Mirrodine XL extensively. Normally just a steady retrieve gets the job done. On a rare occasion that don’t work then I will go to a twitch and pause retrieve.
